Golf Question: What, If Anything, Is The Entry Fee For Major Tournaments?

Now that The Masters is over, I’d like to pose a question. Given my huge ignorance in golf, I’m just wondering if there is an entry fee for golfers who compete in major tournaments, like the Masters, US Open, or whatever.

I do understand that one does have to either qualify or get some sort of “exemption,” but just assuming that this does happen, my question is: Is there an entry fee?

Or maybe, again due to my golf ignorance, is there a fee to even try to qualify?

It appears they are invited which makes me think there is no “entry fee” as such for this tournament.

The Masters has the smallest field out of the major championships at around ninety players. It is an invitational event, but nowadays invitations are largely issued on an automatic basis to players who meet published criteria and as the top fifty players in the Official World Golf Rankings are all invited none of the leading current players in the world miss out. Past champions are eligible to play, but in recent years the Augusta National Golf Club has discouraged them from continuing to participate at an advanced age. Nevertheless Gary Player played in 2006 at the age of 70.
