Good Central European Eateries in Northeast Philadelphia

From time to time I have reason to be in Northeast Philly (and who doesn’t nowadays), and wondered idly if there are any good German/Central European restaurants (Actually, it’s because once I saw a Hungarian club and a German club east of Woodhaven Rd in NE Philly near the Bucks County line - leading me to think there was some sort of sizable Central European population in the area).
Searching around, I found info about the “Old Brauhuas” on Oxford Ave, which looks good. Unfortunately I didn’t find much else particularly interesting, hence my question:
Are there any other good German eateries/restuarants etc (serving German/Polish/Hungarian… heck, any Central European food in general) in Northeast Philly (a mile or two from the border if need be).

For Northeast Philadelphia, please use the exact and precise definition: “Philly more or less north and east of Frankford, or Hunting Park Rd, or the R8 Germantown line, or whatever definition you feel like”
And why does it seem there’s a higher density of strip-mall shopping centres around there than even our beloved Long Island, NY?

The Brauhaus has a great reputation. I haven’t eaten there myself, but a number of my colleagues have.

If you’re willing to dip outside of NE Philly, there’s Otto’s in Willow Grove on Route 611, just North of the PA turnpike. You could easily get there from Woodhave Road if you took Byberry straight to Willow Grove.

You could also check out the Port Richmond area of Philly, near Aramingo Ave. just off of I-95. My brother moved there specifically because it’s a Polish neighborhood, so he always stops at the local Deli’s. He enjoy’s a place called Theresa’s for its potato pancakes, although it may have closed.

You might want to also check on the roadfood.com boards:

I’ve asked some pretty obscure food questions on the boards there and have gotten good replies! I’m sure there are folks from the Philly area there who could direct you to some good eateries in NE Philly.

Good luck!

nitpick – the R8 goes to Northwest Philly, not Northeast.

Ack! You got me on that… I was thinking of the R8 Fox Chase branch, which does go to NE Philly, but somehow managed to get things mangled (the crew at railroad.net will cobble me for that) :smack:

ResIpsaLoquitor, I have indeed been to the Port Richmond/Bridesburg area several times, and although it loooked like a rather tight working class - er, “white” - neighbourhood, I didn’t realize it had a sizable Polish population (I couln’t tell the difference at the Home Depot down there). Does your brother have any other suggestions/favorites besides Theresa (which I guess you think doesn’t exist anymore :frowning: ) - a Kielbasa hero (um, sorry, hoagie) with cheese pierogis and potato pancakes sounds quite tempting
