Black heh, nice to see I’m not the only one. The only thing I have going for me is that my site is still in the design stage. If they don’t have their stuff together by the time it’s done, though, I’m moving.
Techchick, I think you’re my new hero. With unlimited traffic and 500 MB, I can host some of the video clips I was worred about at AH. (Not that I’m expecting that much traffic, but you never know.)
One technical question, about this: can I ease the pain of transferring hosts by putting in the name of one ReadyHosting nameserver as the primary NS and leaving one of the AH nameservers as the secondary? My main concern is for email that might get lost in the shuffle moreso than any hits I might lose (obviously), but I dunno if my email client (or a web browser, for that matter) would check a second NS if the first one gives a 404. I’m guessing not, but I can always hope, no?
Generally, most hosts will already have your email account(s) ready to set up when you sign up to transfer or create a new domain name.
What I am saying is, the day you transfer your account, all those in your email address book need to be aware that you are transferring to a new host, they may get email returned. You can’t have a primary and secondary DNS through different hosts (if I am correct.)
Essentially, when you transfer domains, send a nice little email to all that matter explaining your email may be down for up to 48 hours, a lot of it has to do with the domain authority. Most hosts will have a temp site you can upload to so essentially you have two domains until NetSol or whatever registrar you are going through has resolved the transfer. In addition, all the ISP’s need to update their routing tables in their routers, aka a part of the DNS resolution issue.
So, in most instances, it’s a pretty seamless issue. I have had problems in the past where I had to fight with NetSol (then InterNIC) and it took seven days to get the problems resolved, but this is not a common occurance these days.
I hope I answered your concerns…if not detail it more. I have had a long day developing a site!
Naw, techchick, that’s pretty much answered all my questions. Thankfully I never got around to telling everybody about my new email address(es) so it shouldn’t be a big deal. I just have a compulsive need to have complete collections of things (it really sucked when I was into comics), so the thought of missing even a single email bugs me. Just something I’ll have to get over, I suppose. Thanks.
I did forget to add, ReadyHosting is an NT provider, no Unix or Linux. So keep that in mind if you decide to sign up with them. Most NT hosts I have used or currently use have been up and running with little or no interuption. People like to poopoo NT but in my four years of supporting and using it in many ways I am happy with the results.
The nice thing for me is I am NT MCSE trained so if a tech support person is BSing me, I can pretty know right away. Not that I have had a problem with most web hosting.
As usually, try to get an ISP thats going to be around in the future. Ones that promise too much for too little a cost are either not gonna be around later or have to raise the rates sometime in the future.
I think that webjump.com is still free if you don’t mind the ad banner.
I have been so engrossed with updating my new website(s) that I haven’t been checking all the boards. I just discovered that this thread had more posts to it!
To answer those who were curious, I went with softcomca.com. I had my Family Site with it, and when I bought this new domain, I just weenied out and went with softcom again. I did seriously consider Pair, though.
Yep, I had a BAD feeling about Atomhost! I am not glad to find out that my fears were correct, but I am still relieved that I did not go with that turkey.
Softcom is OK - it offers 50 megs, FP extensions (though I don’t use them now) your own private FTP, 20 emails, all sorts of techie goodies that are over my head, and unlimited traffic. All for $10 a month. It’s not like it’s the absolute best deal (though I think it’s pretty good) but at least I am familiar with their service. I have never had problems. (Knock on wood.)
Another update: I just got yet another domain!!! I decided that I needed a site strictly devoted to promoting my various creative projects. I used softcom’s domain sign-up service instead of InterNIC, and man, were they fast! I’m used to InterNIC taking a day or two (or more) to get a domain set up. But Softcom had me up and ready, basically overnight! And on a Sunday! (Just yesterday.) All for $10 a year registration.
Techchick: Keep us posted on this ReadyHosting! It sounds great! I am always wanting lots of disk space for my sites. (Though 50 megs is not bad.) I just would balk at paying for a year in advance. I’d do it though, if I felt that the company was on solid ground.
Man, this domain thing is addictive. But it’s cheaper than crack, and healthier, OK?
Ok, so the las reply was a while ago, but i was reading it, and it inspired me to go ahead and purchase a domain name of my own which i wont tell yet because i dont want any of you stealing it, and I think it’s a pretty nifty name :). But anyway, pair.com looks promising for webhosting (i decided to just buy the domain name then worry about finding a host later).
As long as this thread is back, I suppose I ought to add my two cents… I use phpwebhosting.com, and so far they’ve been great - $9.95/month gets 125 MB of space, unmetered bandwidth and POP mailboxes, and as many email addresses and mailing lists as you want. You can run your own CGI, and as the name suggests, they support PHP4.
I also must disagree with Sunspace’s assessment of Superb… they seem to bear a striking resemblance to “Company X” from my GQ thread. Also, that U Virtual account is only $9/month if you prepay for a year - semiannually it’s $13/month, or quarterly, $15/month.
I’m now at http://rsa-networks.com. It’s a VDI reseller, just like atomhost, but at least the guy is trying to run it like a small business rather than a faux-multinational corporation. I’m paying $16.95 a month, but only because I need 8 gigs. You can get the 250MB/5GB package for $7.95.
I’ve had a couple of support issues, and they’ve all been resolved within 12 hours.
Hey Bearsclover! It’s Nokogirl from TBFKAE and She-Net! Good to see you! Too bad you’ve already choosen what to do for your website…Ayesha and Tanith are going to have webpages at She-Net and it’s going to be something like $5.00 a month for space.
Oh my gosh. Nokogirl! This is so weird! I don’t use that username here, so it’s so weird to see it here. Man! Blast from the past! (I need to visit She-Net more often, obviously, and keep up on things!)
I always am in the market for more web space, and $5 a month sounds good, so I’ll look into it. Thanks!
