Good cheap web host for my new domain?

Help! I did a search for simular questions, but I couldn’t find anything that helped me.

I just signed up for a domain name with Network Solutions. I thought I could transfer it over to Geocities, (so that Geocities would host the web space) but that looks too difficult. I already have one domain, but I registered it through the web hosting service, which was easy. This time I registered it myself - now I’ve got to find a host, and do the whole transfering thing! Arggh!

Anyone know of any free (or cheap - like sub $10) web hosts, with at least 25 megs space? (I am going to put LOTS of pictures up.) Doesn’t have to be fancy, but I want to be able to upload with ftp.

Any suggestions? Help? Please?

Pair.com might work for you. They are a fairly big and popular company. Cheap too. They have a ftp-access-only account (no telnet) for $5/month (+$1/month for the domain name). Setup would be $30. For that you get 50 MB of disk space, and up to 100 MB/day of transfers. Here’s some more details: http://www.pair.com/pair/ftp.html

I use them for my homepage (www.smackfu.com), and have no complaints.

Thre are free webhosting, use a search engine & search for ‘free web hosting’ cause so many change its tricky to have a n updated list. Free usually means ads though.

http://atomhost.com

I use em. 250 megs, 5 gigs of traffic, cgi, etc etc, no setup fee… for the whopping sum of $7.95/month.

I only signed up 3 weeks ago, but no probs yet.

Thanks you guys!

Pair.com sounds pretty hopeful. Atomhost sounds great, but almost too great. Some good leads! Thanks again!

As yosemitebabe mentioned, Atomhost seems almost too good, so I ran a server check on SmackFu’s and black455 websites with NetMechanic overnight.

Here’s the results:

Results for Pair.com
Results for Atomhost.com

They both did pretty well for basic webhosting, with Pair.com slightly better.

To be fair, they should be checked during the day, for about a week, but I’m probably switching to pair.com

I use freeservers.com
It’s free (duh)but they put a little ad banner at the top, like this. They have web-based email using yourname@yourdomain.com.

If you wanna get rid of the banner, its like $5.95/ month.

I use Internet Communications (www.icom.com). 45 meg of space at $8.95/month.

What are you going to do with 45 megs of space?

Image storage. I was running around 20Meg last I looked and I’m behind in uploads. See http://www.mountaindiver.com or http://www.gamepile.com .

How about Superb.net? http://www.superb.net

Their U.Virtual plan is USD9/- per month, and includes 10 MB. Additional space is 5/month for each 10 MB.

This may be a little more expensive than the other services described in this thread, but Superb.net seems very competent and offers many additional services such as on-server software and databases at IMHO quite reasonable prices.

I highly recommend that you take a look at them.

I use addr.com and have been very happy with it. I am signed up on their silver package. For $9.95/mos I get a 100 MB. 4 GB traffic, etc.

The details are here

http://www.addr.com/services.htm

I can tell you from experience that I have been with them a year and only one time did I have any trouble calling up the site, so I think they are quite reliable.

No matter who choose, make sure they support all the services you need, or may need. I am talking about including email, PERL, Front Page, etc…stuff like that. Some do not support these except for an added fee. Even if you don’t use something now (for example mySQL), you may want to in the future.

Som eoffer you more then one emailbox. Some allow you to host more then one domain name (i.e. differnet domains names point to basically the same place

Actually one of the coolest things is you can have unlimited email addresses. I can basically make any email of the form:

<anything>@leftfieldsports.com

Shop around and make note of the differences. Not all domain hosting is created equal, and it is not just storage space. Good luck!

Right now I am deciding between pair and addr. Like some of the rest of you, my web site will have lots of images, images…and while I’m at it, images. (Oh, tanstaafl, I see you are “behind” on the mountaindiver.com page - where are the pictures from your Yosemite road trip? I looked on your site, very nice. But where are the Yosemite pics? HMMMMM??? :)) [sub]Just being a nag![/sub]

I have all these Yosemite/travel pictures, and I thought I’d start watermarking them, and putting them all one ONE site. (I don’t know much about Digimarc.com - the watermarking place - but I guess you need to designate one site where all your watermarked images will be?) I have seen my pictures swiped by other web sites in the past. While that wasn’t a huuuge problem then (the images were abysmal scans, not much anyone could do with them) now it is. I am learning how to get better quality images. I don’t know what other people would do with them, but I don’t want them swiped, dammit!

I agree, Tretiak - I don’t need any of the fancy goodies right now (though I sometimes use FrontPage) but who knows - I might want to in the future.

Sunspace - thanks for the suggestions. Stabilty and reliabilty are really important, and I’ll bet superb.net is superb in that. But I just know I’d eat through that 10 megs in no time, and I can’t afford to pay too much!

Anyway, keep the suggestions comin’ in! And thanks SO much!

Actually, if you want a whole bunch of other people’s opinion check out:

http://epinions.com/inet-Web_Hosting-All

They actually don’t give the web host I use - addr.com - high marks. I recommend seeing what others have experienced.

Off to IMHO.

So, Yosemite which one did you end up going with? This is part curiousity for its own part and part curiousity because I’m in the same boat. OOC, what caused you to rule out Atom Host? Like you said, they look great. Well, here’s hoping you still check this thread.

I use webjump for many of my sites. I just pay for registering a site as usual & then they make a web site for me…free, stupid ad banner at the top but thats okay cause my sites are usually local politicians names, much to their chagrin.

I hereby withdraw my endorsement for atomhost.

As an explanation would likely get this thrown in the Pit, see this thread at http://cultforum.com for an explanation.

Apparently, they’ve completely shit the bed.

They were on the CNet certified list, at $8.95 a month, sign up (is waived if you transfer, includes domain registration if you don’t already have it). The trick is, you have to pay the year up front so I dropped in $149 in one chunk, um not totally realizing it. Sometimes you have to read the site very thoroughly but they do have 24/7 support, something that means a lot to me.

I hope it goes well if I have bad news to report I will let you know otherwise, no news is good news.
