Today I gave my two week notice at work and accepted a new job for more money, better hours, and less responsibility. Circumstances are such that I’m going to have a week off between jobs, so I’m thinking of taking a two or three day trip somewhere. What I need are suggestions for cities or places that are relatively cheap (a few hundred bucks) for a short decompression vacation. Anyone have any suggestions?
Where are you starting from? Are you looking at drivable places?
Crazy as it sounds, right now is a good time to visit Phoenix. Hotel rates slashed, fewer crowds, still some good major league baseball being played. Yeah, it’s gonna be warm but evenings are sweet, and you can take a quick AM hike in Papago Park if you like. Don’t miss the Arizona Biltmore, what a nice place to stroll at night.
You could even sneak up to Sedona for the day, if you like natural beauty and tons of crystal shops.
My next idea would be San Antonio. Have only been there once but found it quite nice. Or maybe Sacramento, you would be equidistant to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe.
Have a great time, wherever you go.
Air fares to Vegas are usually cheap, and there are some deals on rooms right now.
Seattle is always good for a few days. Pike Place Market, Experience Music Project, good restaurants, Space Needle.
I always vote for Philly, oddly enough. Lots of historic stuff, good museums, great food.
New Orleans should be at the top of the list. It is incredibly entertaining, gorgeous, and has great food. It isn’t expensive for a world class city either.
Boston and San Francisco are great cities to spend a long weekend in - unfortunately both can get expensive fast - but don’t have to be if you can manage to score a cheap hotel room.
In the Midwest - would you believe Duluth, Minnesota? You need a car - but between Duluth and Northern Wisconsin, there is a ton of beautiful scenery, a few worthwhile touist attractions, more culture than you’d expect…
Istanbul?
Sorta helps to know where you are now.
I bet a vacation in Mogadishu would be short.
Or really, really long.
Depending.
There was only one match for Blackwater Park on Google Maps. Apparently he lives in a sewage treatment plant.
Based on that I’d say going anywhere qualifies as a vacation.
Reykjavik is grand for a long weekend - great nature, good partying, and actually quite fine weather (right now).
New Paltz, NY, is a nice area. Walk up the trail at Mohonk Mountain, or climb its face if you’re into that. The town is about an hour north of West Point so you could make a day trip there for historical stuff.
According to Wikipedia, Blackwater Park is an album by the “Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth.” So Stockholm might be a nice place to visit.
For two or three days the only cities are San Francsico and New York. Both have a LOT of free stuff to do and both have great public transit so you don’t have to have a car. Places like Chicago and Philly don’t have much to do really and Boston and DC you don’t need a car but you have to wait in lines to see their museums and such.
So go to SF or NYC.
Well, since he never came back to tell us where he’s starting from or for any other information for that matter, I guess we can assume he’s lying in a drunken stupor in his bedroom closet.
Well, it’s a short vacation for some . . .
And to think I was going to suggest Williamsport, Pennsylvania!
