Does anyone have some good DVD movie review sites to recommend? I have tried conducting searches on yahoo and google, but I can’t seem to find many good sites featuring comprehensive (i.e., reviewing technical elements, bonus features, and the film itself) DVD movie reviews. The one site that I have found that has been informative is www.dvdreview.com, but I would like to know if there are any other good sites out there. Thanks in advance Dopers
I’ve never been fond of DVD Review’s movie reviews, because the reviewer seems to like everything. I have never seen a negative review on that site, and way back when I was still reading it regularly, I actively searched the archives for known crappy movies to see how he reviewed them. Every one, a glowing endorsement. meh. On the plus side, DVD Review has the best “easter egg” section I’ve found on the Internet.
I do usually like the reviews at The Digital Bits, but their reviews don’t come as frequently as I’d like.
The reviews at The Big Picture DVD are also usually pretty good, but they’ve gone to a format where most of their reviews are only available to paid members.
Finally, you might wanna try DVD File. They used to have links to other sites as well, so that if you wanted a review of, say, Silence of the Lambs, you’d look that one up and get not only DVD File’s review, but also links to reviews on other sites. Looks like they stopped doing that, but the reviews are good nevertheless.
I check DVD Journal fairly often, as they seem to get new reviews posted quickly. Layout is good, but the main page is only updated Monday through Thursday.

I kinda like reading the common man’s reviews on Netflix.com whenever I rent from them.
Rottentomatoes is great for any movie reviews. You can search by name or use the Tomato Picker to search by genre, subgenre, MPAA rating, tomatometer rating and period. When you select a movie, in choose type of review, select DVD reviews. The ones from DVD Talk are excellent.
I have often found that the format of lots of reviews in one place leads you to see things you may otherwise overlook due to the one or two local reviews.
Ron Epstein’s reviews at Home Theater Forum are usually extremely informative and almost always include screen shots. The most recent reviews are listed on the front page linked above. Archives are here. I like that Ron is pretty reserved about his “Highly Recommended” tag.
My biggest disappointment to date was the trashing he gave Reservoir Dogs’ video quality, only to have many, many people come out later to say they didn’t see the problem.
I did like that he called 24: Season One a “must buy,” though.
DVD Verdict offers comprehensive reviews within a legal trial theme.
Other than that, I like Hometheaterforum (I post over there regularly) and DVDfile for reviews. Hometheaterforum is also good for discussion of the dvd’s themselves, and the people there are very knowledgeable about technical issues. You can also visit www.hometheaterspot.com for reviews and discussion, though I find their reviews a little less informative than Ron’s at the forum.
