Good Game Gear games?

So this request is a little strange, but I have a good explanation. While I was drunk, I apparently bid on a Game Gear on eBay, and I didn’t know until I actually won it, as I didn’t remember bidding. Anyway, the long and short of it is I am now the proud owner of a Sega Game Gear, and I have no games. I’ve never had one before, so I’d like some suggestions. Favorites? Ones I should stay away from?

I only ever owned Sonic 2, Shinobi, and some MLB game the name of which I don’t remember, but I had plenty of fun with all three (though Shinobi is fiendishly tough in the later levels). If you like the Sonic games, the portable versions of all three are worth having.

IOW, this is a nigh-useless post from a former Game Gear owner who never did much with it, but at least it gives you a bump until a better Sega sage comes along. Happy gaming.

Don’t become this guy

Advice from friends:
I had the Star Trek: Generations game. Don’t get that.

Trying to remember if Ayrton Senna’s GP II was a good game. I’m leaning towards no.

Jurassic Park was actually pretty ok. It was a fun platformer.

I had a baseball game for it that was pretty rad.

There was a Road Rash game for the Game Gear. I’d never pass a 2D Road Rash up .

Sonic Triple Trouble.

GP Rider’s not terrible, if the guy enjoys racing games…

Most of them stunk. That’s why even with better graphics and a color screen, the Gameboy always outsold it and had better games.

I’m very sorry for you. Your best bet is really just sell it yourself.

It was five bucks. Not even worth reselling. Besides, I just bought an AC adapter. I can’t sell it now!

How is Sonic Spinball, if I like pinball games?

Sonic Spinball sucks; avoid at all cost.

The Game Gear has a fine library, it just wasn’t a very good system. Chugged batteries like a terror and had a poor screen.

That said, there are absolutely a lot of gems on the system. Check out -

Sonic the Hedgehog (excellent game; completely different from the Genesis version)
Gunstar Heroes (scaled-down port of one of the finest Genesis games ever)
Ristar (another scaled-down Genesis port; really awesome platformer)
Tails’ Adventure (Sonic’s sidekick in his own, sort of Super Mario Bros. 2-ish game)
Shinobi (like the other entries in the series; it’s pretty good)
Mortal Kombat 2 (good handheld port of the arcade game)
Columns (the GG’s answer to Tetris)
Sonic Drift (Mario Kart ripoff)
Sonic Chaos (typical Sonic game, lots of fun)
Now, you may want to invest in a Master System Converter - a somewhat bulky device that plugs into the back of the GG and gives you the ability to play the entire Master System library of games on your GG.

I should also probably add that I’ve never owned a Sega system before in my life, so I’m open to Genesis or Master System ports.

I’ll second the Sonic games. Also there was a Mickey’s magical adventure game that was pretty fun. Granted I was probably ten or so when I played it.

I also had Bart Vs. The Space mutants, but I can’t recommend that. I had The Incredible Hulk, but don’t get that either. Oh! I also had some game with Taz, that was awful. And something with The Power Rangers, just…no.

I had one and enjoyed Streets of Rage 2… the mortal kombat port was pretty good, and there was a good racing game that was an overhead style trucks in a dirt arena that was also in the arcade at the time…

There was also one of the best darned RPGs that I played on it that I can’t remember the name. I bought a lot of my games at a secondhand store so I’m wondering if maybe I was buying games that weren’t official…

Maybe someone else will remember better… sorry

oh and I liked Alien Syndrome!

I’ll second the Gunstar Heroes recommendation, one of the greatest shooters of all time.

Honestly, though, I was never a big fan of Ristar. Stick with Sonic.
