I’m still in doubt… In a moment of lapse of reason I visited the Big Brother site and applied for the third season. I figured what the heck, I’m not ashamed to make a complete fool out of myself for three and a half months and run the risk of earning 1 million guilders in the process (about half a million dollars). I will be losing my job in a few weeks time and don’t have any clue on what I am about to do next, so I thought this might be a good transitional period.
The family was not too thrilled though. Although my parents let me do whatever I want to do, they made it quite clear that they wouldn’t feel too happy about it. My friends on the other hand think it’s a great idea. And if I win I can pay off my house in one go as an added bonus.
But I wonder, is the money worth the embarresment I might put my family go through? On the other hand, every embarrasing thing I might do, will be forgotten in a few months time, whereas the money will be permanent.
Let me throw this at the always discretionary SDMB. What do you think? Should I go through with this? It’s not like I’m in yet, I still have to pass the first selection, so maybe I shouldn’t worry too much…

Well, I don’t care too much on what others might tell or think of me. As said, those embarrasing moments will be forgotten within a few months time. I don’t care. I’m happy to felch a goat on national TV as long as it can earn me 1 million guilders (yes, I’m that much of a slut). However, I wonder what to do with the people who do care for it.
Yeah, maybe, but remember that Holland is a much smaller country, so in stead of a couple of hundred thousand competitors, I will only have a few hundred to maybe a thousand or two. That, and my charming personality (ahum), plus the fact that I have something that hasn’t been shown before, makes me a rather good candidate I think. Dunno, I’ll see where it will end.
(Oh, and of course the fact that I’m such a slut, I’ll do anything for money ;)).
Did anyone else reading this think he’d signed up for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization? Maybe they don’t have that in Holland, but it would be a better use of your time…
Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a nationwide (U.S.) organization that pairs up kids with older kids (or young adults) for the purpose of giving them someone who can be a solid role model. This, of course, would be for children who don’t have such a person in their lives already, such as orphans or kids from destitute families. It’s a very worthy organization.
Aghris, I’m sure you’ve got something to offer a young person with no role-model, goat-felching aside ;). The only reason I haven’t signed up yet is because there is a minimum time commitment that I am not sure I can meet at this point in my life, with my job commitments, studying, marriage, etc. (Thanks for the explanation, dantheman. I was away from the boards for a couple of hours.)
But hey, if you want to go on TV and let people see all sorts of private things about yourself, then go for it. I just would NOT want to give up my privacy that way.
Actually, Aghris, one thing they’re doing with BB (the show) this year is infusing more sex into it. From what I’ve heard, contestants will be given freer reign to do whatever they want.
Remember, dear, I think you’d be cut off from the SDMB for your stay on Big Brother. Could you go cold turkey? Why not apply for season 11 of The Real World? Are you young enough? Do you have to be a U.S. citizen? At least on Real World you get to keep your phone and teevee and computer.
What, the fact that you’re gay? Dude, you’d better break out the boas and fake eyelashes already. As it is, you’re way too “normal” to be considered interesting Gay Material[sup]TM[/sup] for BB.
Althoooouuuugh… there IS an option. See, they kinda select the people on possible sexual compatibility, right? OK, here’s the deal. Get the most flaaaaaaaaaming gay man you know to sign up. It will give you good odds on being selected. That way, they can have a 3 month drama series on the “AGGRESSIVE GAY MAN” seducing the “TIMID, SHY GAY BOY”, with all the thinkable resulting emotional outbursts! Think of the RATINGS!!
Ugh. I just typed an entire post thinking like a TV HotShot. I feel kinda dirty now.

Thanks, Coldie. I must say that I hate the show too. Luckily I was in Scotland during the time they broadcasted the previous two seasons, so I have seen very little of it.
But the fact that I don’t like the concept doesn’t keep me from wanting that 1 million guilders ofcourse…
Also, you’ve only seen me one night in wich I was mostly sober. Really, you don’t know what a drama queen I can be. I’m an attention slut extraordinaire (No seriously, you haven’t seen the best of me that night).
(And to be honest, I already did think of your suggestion, but I don’t know any gay men, so it’s a bit hard. What are you doing the next couple of months, coldie? ;))

The gay card could work given how things are working out on the current series two UK BB - seven left, of which two are gay men (not that I’m watching or anything…).
I’d say, get friggin fit (bodies seem to be very important) and show them a lot of humour. BB wants a lot of things from the contestants but the most important thing is ratings – in the view of BB, audiences seem to love good bodies, people who ‘ooze’ personality and the potential for a little hanky-panky. If they take the gay option this series, they’ll be two gay men.
