Good movies and music for smoking...?

The movie Koyanisqaatsi, with music by Philip Glass. No dialogue, just images and music, some remarkably moving, others frightening, and one high-speed sequence that makes you feel like the top of your head is going to blow off – and that’s when you’re straight!

I don’t think most people would enjoy watching this movie high. I know I wouldn’t, because it features Phillip Glass’s nightmarish arpeggiated minimalist music. Some people like this (including my best friend and band-mate who I started a thread about some time ago) but it’s not for everyone. I’ve always believed that Phillip Glass was contracted by the government to write music designed to drive prisoners of war insane as a form of psychological torture.

Here’s a summation of every Phillip Glass song in Koyanisqaatsi:

Arpeggio for 4 beats
Key change one whole step down
Arpeggio for 4 beats
Key change one whole step up
Repeat

OK…is that an exaggeration? Yeah. Kinda. To the average listener it’s not much of an exaggeration. Glass and his minimalist music are very polarizing in the music community. It’s really a love it or hate it thing. But if you haven’t already seen this movie, I wouldn’t recommend smoking and watching it for the first time.

It’s quite scary, really. There are all sorts of horrific images of destruction and deprivation. I remember one scene in particular where there is a long line of hospital beds with dying people on IV drips. Yeah, that’s great stuff to watch when you’re high…

I’d say for high movies, you can’t beat:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Mr. Show (OK, it’s a show, but it’s hilarious.)

My music choices may be obscure and esoteric, but in terms of high movies I like to go with the classics.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add: Anima Mundi. It’s a Koyaanisqatsi-esque movie, except that it only features scenes of animals, and it’s not scary. The soundtrack is by Phillip Glass, though, so I’d reccommend pushing the Mute button and then popping in The Nudes by Pele. It’s much better that way.
