Good Omens - Amazon Prime adaptation by Neil Gaiman

Oh, God no. Neil doesn’t have the talent to carry it off for that long. He’s a writer, not an actor. And I think this might be one of the ways he is self aware (he is not a very self aware individual, in my experience).

But he has narrated the audio versions of several of his books.

I agree with this part. He was one of my earliest choices to follow on the Twitter thing and also the first I deleted.

Still, I base my opinion on the Lucifer episode, which I think worked very well.
For those who haven’t read the book, to me, the narrator is just below the surface of the plot. The voice is avuncular, dry and very, very English. As a dark-ish comedy, it wouldn’t have worked with a straight, neutral narrative. There is a clear understanding that there is a someone there, telling me, the reader, a very tall tale.

And God doesn’t even have a cameo in the book. Metatron handles that

OK, so maybe not that self aware.

I always “hear” the narration of the book in Terry’s voice, no matter who wrote that section. So you are correct!

Martin Jarvis, who did the audiobook of Good Omens, wouldn’t have been a bad choice for the VO narration.

AFAICT, it was “someone with a heavy Puerto Rican accent trying to tone it down but failing because they’re not a very good actor”.

Still a poor casting choice, IMO.

There isn’t just one American accent either. There are some more familiar than others, and some that to be honest can sound “foreign” or unintelligible even to other Americans (I used to say my mother-in-law needed sub-titles when she spoke - her native dialect was mountain Appalachian. It’s not standard American English.)

Perhaps it’s like how, to many American ears, anything non American is categorized as either “British” or “Australian” English - which folds South African into British, as an example even though it’s not. The townspeople head her accent, couldn’t place it in Australia or something of the sort, and dumped it into “American”.

There’s also some cultural traits common among Americans, including how we behave (or don’t) in public that also might tip a person off to someone’s national origin.

Her accent wasn’t one I immediately placed in a location in North America, but I am so used to hearing so many diverse accents in real life that I just don’t stumble over those things the way folks from Britain do, who seem far more sensitive to accent nuances than I am.

Technically, Puerto Rican is an American accent… Just not a terribly common one, especially in media. Although in some locations both Puerto Rican Spanish and Puerto Rican English are frequently heard.

While not up to Tennant and Sheen standards, I thought she did a tolerable job. Yes, I would have preferred better, but it was far from unwatchable.

She had a hispanic-colored accent. Which is totally plausible for an American who grew up in a Hispanic-influenced context.

Distances on roads in Britain are all in miles - km aren’t used much at all.
I’m currently 4 episodes in and enjoying it. The narration makes it a bit of an oddity, and the third ep in particular didn’t seem to have a lot actually happen in it, but we’re building up to the climax and things are progressing pretty much as I expect.
I’m not sure about some of the casting. Anathema seems fine to me, but Jack Whitehall for Newton seems lifeless and just a bit too useless. Perhaps I’m expecting too much because I remember his part being larger in the book (although it has been a long time since I read it).

I do love Tennant and Sheen though, although it’s possible that Tennant is enjoying himself a bit too much - I didn’t like the plant scene at all, I thought it was overwrought and much funnier written down than shown on screen.

My nearly immediate thought on Whitehall was: “Now there is the next Tom Hanks.” But of course I’ll have to see him in a more substantive role to be certain.

I don’t know where the humour in the plant scene was meant to be found. I thought it was a purposefully jarring reminder that this is a Daemon we are dealing with.

I’m a huge fan of Whitehall from Fresh Meat, a sitcom about college (err university) students in Manchester. I love that show.

Jack Whitehall is more of a poor-man’s Hugh Grant than a Tom Hanks. He’s a good comic actor, but pretty much one-note.

Double weird - I’ve seen roadsigns in km. But then I don’t drive very often here.

Agreed - Tennant chews the scenery a little too much IMO. Also, matter of taste, but I think they should have kept him with the Fabio-like hair rather than cutting it short. My mind’s Crowley definitely has the most annoying ponytail you’ve ever seen anyway :).
OTOH Sheen is so delightfully prim and fussy, the casting for Azzy couldn’t have hit closer to the mark.

I liked his mane =) I also liked the color [wait, British … colour! ] I also liked his eyes - was wondering contacts or CGI on those.

Sheen really did hit Azzy right on the mark, his whinging about getting his coat dirty after having managed to keep it clean for the past 120 years was brilliant =) I adore the bookstore, I think if I had an inordinately large amount of money, I would buy an old building like that one, put a lovely apartment upstairs and have a wonderful used book store downstairs. Not in one of the ‘normal’ big cities like NY, LA, Washington but perhaps Cinncinnati or Kansas City or even Rochester NY. I probably wwouldn’t worry about foot traffic, but I would love to do killer online book sales by buying up libraries at auction and sorting out the really good books from the book of the month drivel. The ‘crap’ books would get randomly donated to hospitals, maybe I would have an outside take one/leave one bookcase - an entryway with a bookcase and a comfy chair might be fun =)

I also loved the flaming Bently CGI - it was amazing looking.

One, two, many, lots.
Lots.

It seems that some of the very-non-fans took the wrong turn at Albuquerque:

Thousands petition Netflix to cancel Amazon Prime’s Good Omens

I liked this bit:

ETA: Also, I don’t think you can “cancel” a show that’s already fully released. I suppose they could ask Amazon (or Netflix or Instagram or IHOP or whomever they think is in charge) to remove it from their sites, but that ain’t happening.
