Good riddance, Toronto - Hello, Surfer dudes...

Well, the other Mr. Daffyd and I are moving on to our next adventure… I’ve accepted a job in Los Angeles in January…

Living in Toronto for the past three years has been an adventure - and not always a good one.

We had to deal with a bar opening five houses away, (Do a search on “My house has turned into a disco” for more info.), and finally realized that no one else in the neighborhood wanted to actually deal with the noise… We even received a letter from the neighborhood association telling us we were too “negative” because we complained… and the “City Councillor” here never lifted a finger to help.

We had originally moved here because I was offered a job in a very specialized field, and when we got here - after selling our house in the Bay Area, and quitting our jobs - they actually had the nerve to give the job to someone else… So I spent the first year or so floundering… Three degrees, and I wasn’t able to work in my field here… I ended up going back to school since there was nothing else to do… Luckily the husband got a job quite quickly, so we survived financially…

Going back to school, I quickly realized that homophobia is alive an well here in Toronto - I tried to ask a student in one of my classes to not use the word “fag” in class, and ended up with him in my face screaming that he could use the word “faggot” any time he wanted, and besides, I was “old”, and not going to go far in life anyway. I literally thought I was going to be attacked on campus at some point.

When I complained to school authorities, I heard excuse after excuse - from “If we talk to him, it will just make things worse”, to “you asked us not to take the issue any farther, so we closed the case”(!)… and no matter who I talked to, nothing happened - and I kept trying - all the way up to one of the deans… but nothing ever happened.

When I think back, I realize that a twenty year old punk got to assault a 48 year old, with no consequences.

In another one of my classes, a student stood up and screamed, “Shut up, you fucking American!” and no one in authority said anything to her.

There have been some good things, but overall, our experience in Toronto has not been a good one… So when I was offered a job in L.A., I jumped at it…

We’re now finishing off renovating our house here in Toronto, and will be putting it on the market ASAP… Now we just have to hope the Canadian dollar goes back up - since every time it goes down a cent, we lose about $5,000…

The husband will be staying back here until the house sells, then will be packing up and heading down to join me… It will certainly be nice to actually work in something that uses my expertise…

Now just gotta drive cross country in the winter and find a place to live… L.A. here we come!

Sorry to hear that your Toronto experience sucked so much.
I remember you from the summer of 2007- I had just moved from Canada to Alameda, CA and you were very helpful in my “tell me about the East Bay” thread. I really appreciated your input. Unfortunately in the last few weeks, we left Alameda to go back to Calgary.

I wish more than anything that we could go back to California for good. It was the best year and a half of my life.

So please enjoy California vicariously for me, OK?

The great thing about returning to California is that homophobia has been completely eradicated here. We’ve seen no recent evidence of it in the state at all.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Alameda… It wasn’t easy to decide to move to southern California instead of back to Alameda… It’s still one of my favorite places in the Bay Area…

And I guess when we add your positive and my negative experiences in the last few years, I guess they all balance out!

Thank GOD… I was worried that California might have done something stupid or homophobic while I was away.

I’m just sorry to hear that you had such terrible experiences in Toronto. I really like it here, but I’ve never had any of the hassles that you’ve apparently had. I’d rather ship the assholes out and keep you + your husband.

Thanks for the kind words… I know there are some really nice people here… and I got to do some amazing things in film school - filming all over the city - malls, museums, City Hall and more… but it just seems Toronto and I never clicked…

Do we still have time to work out a Tronna Dope Fest before you leave?

Might be pretty tough to find time - between trips to LA to find a house to rent, and days working like maniacs to finish renovating this one to get on the market, life is crazy.

Le Ministre, I think that’s the nicest thing anyone in Toronto ever said to me!

(OK, just kidding, but it is a nice gesture!)

Well, obviously there are jerks in every city. Well, statistically they’re everywhere. So are good people. I’m sorry to hear about the bad taste in your mouth from Toronto.

So, you bought in a neighbourhood that was zoned for both commercial and residential.

Yeah, well we usually don’t do things like that in Canada. Something doesn’t add up here.

Or, the American dollar goes back down.

I recall the thread about the local disco, and I remember hoping everything worked out for you. Guess it didn’t. But knowing Toronto as I do (and in spite of my current location, I know Toronto very well, having lived there for many years), I’m saddened to hear that the city treated you badly. Such things shouldn’t happen, but–even in Toronto–they can. Not an excuse, just a sad fact.

I hope everything works out for you Daffyd, and that you’ll keep posting. I’ll look forward to hearing from you as you settle back into the US. Good luck!

Yeah, that sucks. Sounds like you ran into a douchebag or three. Tell you what, if you stay, we promise to let you get married and stay married. Whaddya say?

Early welcome to the neighborhood! Do you know what part of L.A. you’ll be moving to (it is huge, afterall)? Where will your new job be? Let us know if you need any help finding your way around down here.

On behalf of Toronto, allow me to apologize for the intolerant jackasses you’ve encountered during your stay with us.

Unfortunately, even a city as goshdarned nice as Toronto has a few unpleasant citizens… it’s kind of like how every family has the one uncle who makes a drunken spectacle of himself at every family gathering and ends up passed out in the corner with vomit on his shirt.*

(also… what kind of retard in *film school *decides it’s a good idea to act like a homophobic jackass - that kind of attitude will get him about as far in the industry as a giant swastika tattoo on his forehead  )

  • …or maybe that’s just my family…

Daffyd, were you married to your partner in Canada? If so will your union be recognised when you move back to the states?

Thanks for the offer… Even though we’re moving back to Civil Partnership-land, we’ve been together 21 years, so no matter what anybody else calls it, we’re married.
Oh, and we were married in beautiful Indio, California in August, so we’re one of those 18,000 couples in limbo in California…

I’m so sorry it didn’t work out. Alas, Toronto has its share of idiots and jerks as well.

A TronnaDope would be a good idea even if Daffyd is only there in spirit. Considering that November is the Most Depressing Month here, I wouldn’t mind moving to warmer climes myself.

I totally agree… that’s why even when the idiot was screaming at me, I could still sort of stand back and see the absurdity of the whole thing… When he yelled at me that I was old, and he was going to “go alot further in life than some old man”, I thought, “Listen a**hole, you aren’t even smart enough to realize the old man has three degrees already”… but decided he wasn’t worth wasting time on…

I figure he’ll get his first job and be put in his place pretty quickly - or more likely - fired…

Thanks! Looks like we’ll be living in Pasadena… I’m going to be working near Van Nuys/North Hollywood, so that’s an acceptable commute I hear… and we both absolutely love the place…

Hardest part is going to be finding a rental house with two dogs… As much as we’d love to jump right in and buy our own place, (God I love bungalows!!!) we’d rather get to know the area before we invest… and it seems prices are going down…

If the job hadn’t been in the valley, I would have loved to live in one of the beach communities…

Flying down in two weeks for a week of house-hunting… and driving down January 2nd to start work… Going to drive the sort of southern route across the U.S… I’ve never been to Cincinnati, Memphis, El Paso and Phoenix… Just gotta hope there are no major snowstorms on the way!

I couldn’t tell you about the commute from Pasadena (which I agree, is charming!), but my husband commutes from South Redondo Beach up to Paramount Studios in Hollywood, and while it’s not a fun commute, it’s certainly doable. And for the past few months he’s been taking the bus, so he doesn’t even have to worry about driving in the nonsense!

And I also agree about your love of bungalows. We have an 800 sf beach cottage, ourselves, and we just adore it. If you decide to consider more than one location and want to take a look around the South Bay, let us know!
