Good roundup of Bible verses no one follows?

With all the talk from certain circles lately about how God’s law is higher than man’s, I thought I’d ask if there’s a good roundup out there of Bible verses that most Christians don’t follow. You know, like the ones that forbid eating shrimp or wearing poly/cotton blends, with specific chapter and verse.

Thanks in advance!

“Exodus 35:2
For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of sabbath rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it is to be put to death.”

That one is my favorite, and a good thing it’s not followed, specially because people disagree on when the sabbath is.

Nobody did it better than Jed Bartlet - chapter and verse.

Forbidding eating shrimp (and oysters, and lots of other things), Leviticus 11:9-12:

Clothes with more than one fabric, Leviticus 19:19:

(Which may also prohibit mules, depending on the exact meaning of the Hebrew words rendered as “different kinds of animals”.)

From the New Testament, we have Matthew 5:40:

And 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 goes on at length about the wickedness of believers suing each other (so I guess American lawyers are only used by us godless heathens, and by Christians who have disputes with us godless heathens).

No-fault divorce, Matthew 5:32:

And back to the Old Testament, Leviticus 19:28 says:

I seem to recall some doofus getting mocked all over the Internet for having one of the anti-gay verses of Leviticus…tattooed on himself.

Yeah, it’s also a damned good thing our Constitution and laws don’t remotely follow the entire thirteenth chapter of Deuteronomy.

Just to spare you the lecture later when you proudly tell your anti-gay friend that he’s wearing a cotton/poly blend shirt, a big part of Christianity is that they were no longer bound by Judaic law. Crowing about mixing meat and dairy or the uncleanliness of a menstruating woman just makes you look silly.

But quoting Old Testament laws to that anti-gay friend makes perfect sense to me, since that hypothetical friend is basing his anti-gay stance on Old Testament laws. Jesus never said the first word about same sex marriage or relationships, did he? (And spare me whatever Paul/Saul said. He was a Johnny-come-lately who never even met the Messiah, so I distrust his take on “no, no, this is what Jesus really meant!”)

1 Peter 2:18
Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

1 Timothy 2:9
I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes.

(I’m guessing they would also look down on plastic surgery, botox, fake nails, fake tits, etc.)

1 Timothy 2:11-14
A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

Matthew 5:28-30
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

(~90% of male internet users are happy to ignore that one.)

Love your neighbors as yourself.

All others don’t apply to the children of God, the law, which we can never follow, is nailed to the cross and no penalty remains, only Love, which is God, remains, the original and eternal. But many don’t display this type of love, perhaps they don’t love themselves, many people do not, so in that they are actually following it.

The law is still there, and always will be there, for those who are still in the state of sin (not yet children of God), that quasi-stable quantum state where they are on their own, yet destined to come back to God so never on their own, but until they come back they are and have been both at the same time.

Thread win.

Shodan

If this is related to the new marriage laws in the US, I think it’s more important to stress that in the Bible there was never just one type of marriage between a man and a woman. Concubines, slave marriage, hell Levirate marriage meant if a man died his brother HAD to marry his wife to make sure their seedline was passed on. We don’t still follow those marriage traditions so the religious right needs to stop harping on ‘traditional marriage’.

If this was about something else… carry on.

Yep. If they profess to be Christian, then this is the only law.

As to Paul, when you’ve been blinded by a vision and healed by a miracle, perhaps you and he can compare notes.

I don’t remember any time Jesus said anything about beating your wife or buggering chickens either, so I assume you’re of the opinion that he was totes OK with both those and a whole host of other things he never enumerated, yes?

Who has been quoting Biblical verses to prohibit buggering chickens?

Genesis 4:13-15

Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

…holdonaminute. At this point in time, there are only four people on the Earth, and Cain just killed one of them. Who, exactly, are these other people Cain’s afraid of???

Since when have logic and fairy tales overlapped?

It doesn’t say “Whoever finds me in the next ten minutes.” Lifespans in Genesis are measured in centuries – plenty of time for someone to find Cain down the line.
