Some great photos of Newman & Woodward, including their wedding announcement.
One more thing - we now officially know whose name will pin the needle on the ‘Applause-O-Meter’ at next year’s Oscar telecast.
As a father of a 5yo boy, I think first of Paul as Doc from Pixar’s Cars even though I have seen half a dozen of his movies. I guess a sequel probably won’t happen now that Newman, Carlin, Joe Ranft and (almost) Owen Wilson died.
Shame about Paul…
I used to joke (actually, I was serious!) that the two men on my “Actors Over 80 I’d Do In A Heartbeat” were Newman & Douglas (Kirk). Now that list is down to one - at least until Clint Eastwood has a few more birthdays.
For me, that scene in “The Long, Hot Summer” when he’s taunting Joanne Woodward from her balcony - he’s wearing only boxers and carrying a pillow. Jesus.
Not often does such class, grace and philanthropy come in such a blindingly beautiful package.
Joanne Woodward was the luckiest woman in Hollywood.

Expected, but so sad. My heart aches for Joanne. He was one of my favorite actors, on-screen and off.
I love that he and Joanne had a quickie Las Vegas wedding, but one that lasted 50 years.
I adore all the movies/performances that he usually gets kudos for, such as Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, The Sting, and so on, but one of my favorite performances that doesn’t often get mentioned was in John Huston’s film The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean. It’s quirky, fun, and it has so many great lines that Newman just tosses off perfectly.
My favorite:
Bean’s obsession with Lily Langtry is at the heart of the film.
I was just thinking about watching Road to Perdition again, only now it’s going to be bittersweet.
Goodbye, Paul.
I lived in Johnstown, PA, when he filmed Slapshot. Unfortunately, I never had the good luck to meet him, but watching the film brings back memories of my home town.
I will be wearing my Charlestown Chiefs jersey with the #7 on the back and sleeves in his memory today.
The man was a class act, both on and off the screen. His enduring marriage to Joanne Woodward is something we can all aspire too.
The world is a little emptier tonight. I hope he at least went peacefully.
It is obvious from the tenor of his long and classy life Mr. Newman made a LOT of love
A personal favorite of mine as well - I have it on DVD and every now and then I’ll dust it off for another view.
But oddly enough the film that came to mind when I was mulling over this news, was a lower-quality Western he did called Hombre. Something about his performance as the only decent human being amongst a nest of losers and racist trash always fascinated me. It’s not a great film and not his best job by far ( though he never did a lousy one I can think of, even in the weakest of movies ). But that’s the image of Newman that is emblazoned on my mind whenever I think about him.
A great, great loss to the rest of us. But an even greater life lived for himself.
My favorite Newman & Woodward movie will always beMr. & Mrs. Bridge. Translating the two books into film was one helluva task, and I’m glad they were up to it.
And I just drove past the Painted Turtle today, before I got the news.
**Torn Curtain **was on last night (not sure which channel I was watching).
I remember most the opening scene in **Cool Hand Luke **with him beheading the parking meters. Then the eating of 54 hardboiled eggs in the prison camp. And the finale when he echoed the famous Strother Martin line, “What we got here is…failure to communicate.”
Other roles come to mind in **Exodus, The Sting, The Verdict **(filmed largely in the Mass. Statehouse on Beacon Hill, Boston, across from which I used to live), **The Hudsucker Proxy **(filmed where I used to live), and then there was Irwin Allen’s rehash of all his disaster movies, alas, When Time Ran Out…
He had some great quotes:
“The embarrassing thing is that the sald dressing is outgrossing my films.”
“People stay married because they want to, not because the doors are locked.”
"I picture my epitaph: “Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown.”
“I’m a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community.”
Aw dammit, that made me cry.
Gawker makes their mark by being snarky and irreverent. Yet, I think this tribute to Paul Newman is particularly well stated so I’ll link it.

Then, check out the Wiki article about the Actors Studio that they linked to:
Newman’s Own is the best salsa in the supermarket!
Paul Newman is my 75 year old mother’s favorite actor by far.
My three favorite Newman films:
-
** Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid **(I thought nobody could possibly be cooler than Newman after seeing this film at age 11 – except maybe Robert Redford.)
-
**Cool Hand Luke **(My favorite line: “Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.”)
-
**The Sting **(The 4 nines vs 4 jacks scene on the train was priceless)
Tamerlane, I’m glad to know someone else likes Judge Roy Bean too!
Wonderful! One of my favorite quotes is the one regarding why he would never cheat on Joanne.
“Why fool around with hamburger when you have steak at home?”
