Goodbye for a little while....maybe

Yeah, Fenris, I feel your pain. See you when my Cox@home figures it all out.

sigh

Fenris - listen very closely. Go at once to the bow of the boat - that is, the blunt end. Climb onto the railings, and don’t let go until you see Leonardo di Caprio. We’re rowing as fast as we can.

Repeat after me: “Broadband is dead.” (in the US)

OK, it’s not dead, but on life support. Cable broadband is in deep trouble. ALL the DSL ISPs are dead or close with nothing left except telcos – who don’t want to sell cheap broadband.

Broadband is destined to be less available and more expensive for the next few years in the U.S.

  • Squeegee, who has lived in Silicon Valley(!) and couldn’t get broadband. I now live elsewhere and have Starband. It’s is far from ideal, but all I could get. I suspect we’ll hear that refrain from modem-users five years from now: ‘its all I could get’. All thanks to the broadband fiasco unfolding now.

That was what happened about 8 months ago when I called from our old address to find out about the possibilities. The person who I was transferred to didn’t KNOW whether or not it was available for me there and told me they’d call me back.

I called today, though, and they claim they can get it hooked up (at my new address) on Dec. 17. I also got in touch with a local ISP and I’m set to do it if we decide to go that way. It’ll run about the same per month as the current cable-with-dialup-backup arrangement we’re using now.

Although squeegee isn’t putting me in an optimistic mood. Hey, look! I’m posting this at 1:15 local time!

From today’s IMDB.com’s Studio Briefing:

My sympathies to you all.

I have @home and my internet connection has been back up since Monday morning. It’s actually faster than it was before the change.
