AT&T@Home being shut down?!?!

I am a subscriber of att@home in Eugene OR. I have been hearing all about it being shut down. I am really alarmed! Why haven’t they sent us a notice of this? Please inform me!

I’ve got @home through Cox in Phoenix and they have sent out messages about it. They are going to try to keep subscribers conneted and likely switch over to a new service but a lot of stuff is in the air. Best thing I can tell you is get a free dialup ISP like Netzero and an alternate email address such as through Yahoo.

Comcast Cable (hiss! hiss!) is about to put an end to their cable modem service (actually run by Excite).

So are they going to come pick up the modem they leased me??

You’d better call your cable provider. Cox is trying to maintain service but that may not apply to all providers in the @home network. As of 30 seconds ago I can still get my @home mail through a POP connection over the net so the mail servers are still up. When I get home I’ll see if the cable is actually still working.

OK, here’s the deal.

Many cable companies contracted with a company called Excite@home to provide their high-speed cable access (which they themselves founded and originally financed).

The company went public and raised financing from the public, and it’s legal obligation (fiduciary duty) went to its shareholders and, when they became insolvent, lenders.

A few weeks ago, the company went bankrupt.

Today, the bankruptcy judge gave the company permission to terminate it’s contracts with the cable companies. The company was losing money, and hoped to demand higher prices from the cable providers.

The reaction of the cable companies seems right now to tell the company to pound sand, they would simply terminate the service until they can develop alternatives.

Negotiations may or may not ensure, but I know some cable companies are shutting the service even as we speak (Charter’s email servers are down, for example).

I’ll keep you updated as developments occur.

Here’s a link to a good article on the situation:

ExciteAtHome Can Shut Down

Also, there are some links at the bottom to related stories.

I’m in Iowa, formerly AT&T Broadband, they sold their rural area cable and cable modem systems to MediaCom. I called the City Cable TV Commission office, they said that MediaCom doesn’t have any infrastructure in place to pick up from Excite, so they’re anxious to come to agreements to continue service. Nobody wants to pull the plug on 3.7million subscribers.
Manhattan, I’ve seen that same story under two different headlines. It appears that Excite has more leverage, they have the go-ahead to turn off cable systems, but the new providers have even more economic incentive to just pay up and continue until they’ve made alternate arrangements. Oh well, time will tell.

I’m on Comcast @ home — and it’s 1 minute to midnight.

I might just be disappearing for awhile…

Twenty past midnight here in “Comcast Country.”

Things are okey-dokey.

I’m on Rogers @Home here in Canada.

They’ve been having this mad switch-over process this week that’s been an absolute failure. Anyway, we’re now on @Rogers cable service.

Studi

Well, it’s after midnight here on the west coast and, so far, everything seems to be jus

According to the Excite@home webpage, they can shut down any time now…BUT…they’re trying to get more money from the cable operators.

You mean that the judge would give them more money for it if they shut down? I believe that’s the idea here. Maybe someone can explain how that works?

Comcast@home here (New Jersey) still have access
