I now need to read up on who you are to see if I actually care about this.
Gut feeling is that I don’t.

There are days when I think that the natural lifespan of the average human being is just too fucking long. If even half of those comments were sincere, then I firmly believe the next generations aren’t replacing us fast enough.
Looks like he was banned three hours after writing his OP. Talk about better safe than sorry!
Sheesh. His initial posts seemed to be well written, a point of SOME kind in hand, and after three replies on most subjects, WE’RE OUT TO GET HIM! How?
I do wish him well. I think he’s confused, maybe in a crazy part of life, and looking for some solstice of some kind.
You don’t always get that here on SDMB, but we actually read what you write, and if we don’t we tell you. There’s at least that! And that’s… (sorry) honesty. He wasn’t honest, IMHO. It seemed like every OP had an agenda and was baiting us.
Perhaps him and Diogenes can start their own forum??
You need to kill them with fire. Else they just regen.
Sane ? Never heard of it.
Well, he just missed it.* Never mind, there will be another one along soon enough.
A case of the Over-enthusiastic Spellchecker Demon strikes again?
He could have found this three weeks ago, and spared us the logorrhea-strewn suicide-by-mod.
ETA: Ninja’d! Rats.
I wish Honesty well. His perspective was pretty unique, and his passion was clear. He wasn’t perfect, but I think the board is a little poorer for his departure.
If ever there were the perfect farewell for the poster in question…
Regards,
Shodan
Or as they say in parts of the South, “Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.”
You know who else had a unique perspective and lots of passion?
Most of the crazy people in the world.
Hard to imagine how.
Hey, I was just getting to know you!!
It’s a matter of opinion, but I think he had an interesting point of view, even when we disagreed. Just like plenty of other posters with unusual points of view who can be abrasive (cough Der Trihs, cough). I’m glad he brought up that discussion about Coates’ article about reparations, for example.
But then I’m an open-arms, welcoming type. I even welcome those on the opposite side of the spectrum, like Shodan and my blood-brother Terr.
I hear there are also Jews here!
Dodged a bullet there.
kthxbye.
What’s weird to me, I was born in the South (in the 50s) and raised there. I later lived all over the country and the world due to being in the Army for over 20 years, but I would frequently return to the South for family functions and various other things throughout my life and after the Army I’ve lived exclusively in the South.
I guess growing up, I heard more than enough “real” racism that I know it when I see it. Owners at small businesses where I had part time jobs who would quite openly tell me, “if a nigger ever comes in with an application, take it and throw it away once they leave the store.” This was years after such activity was prohibited by Federal law. And that’s honestly not close to the most egregious thing I’ve heard.
I think America is far less racist today than it was when I was a kid, but I think some level of prejudice against anyone different from ourselves is going to be with us for a really long time, generations to come.
But that being said, the SDMB in general is actually very much not-racist. Of all the places to find racism, this isn’t really the best place. We have many posters over the years who have expressed racist ideas–and every single time I remember it happening it became a beatdown, with the masses uniting to denounce/bash the person for post after post and page after page. You can express racist ideas here–and it will make you extremely unpopular.
So to me it’s shocking that Honesty says he was little exposed to racism in his personal life growing up, but the virulent racism that runs rampant here forced him to become an Internet troll dead set on pissing off an entire message board. It’s like we’ve lived in different countries and post on a very different message board.
Oh, I have no problem recognizing that the U.S. has made considerable strides since the 1950s, or even the 1980s, but then some story about a Justice of the Peace who wouldn’t issue a marriage license to a mixed-race couple comes up as a stark reminder.
Agreed, but my key point is modern racism is not well received here. For every person who might defend that JP or support various racist policies, on this forum there are usually 100 people who oppose it and 25 who oppose it enough to pile onto the guy spouting the racist stuff.
it makes the SDMB a strange place to be the target of an “anti-racism” crusade.
Welp, that’s too bad. Am I the only one who learned in this thread that Honesty is black? Or gay?
I agree with Martin Hyde- we get some racist bullshit on this board, but from the limited amount of time I can spend here it doesn’t seem to me like it gets accepted at all, and those posters AFAICT end up with reputations as the biggest morons on the board. I guess I haven’t followed most of the threads Honesty was in, but I can’t see why he thinks this, of all places, is especially racist.
I’ve been reading the biography of Andrew Jackson lately, and Holy Shit!!1!1! were people unabashedly, unselfconsciously racist in those days. Yah, everyone knows how racist this country was in the past, but if you’re ignorant of history like I am and take a look at the source material, it is still pretty surprising. If we compare Jackson to Hitler wrt his treatment of the Indians, I guess we can say that Jackson didn’t torture the Indians before he killed them, would tolerate their further existence once they’d been driven out of the land he coveted, and didn’t go on a career-defining propaganda campaign against them. He seemed motivated by making America strong vs. its international rivals, not any particular hatred against the Indians, but geez, the fact that he was a genocidaire does not seem to have weighed on his conscience at all, and his opinion of blacks and Indians as inferior did not seem to ignite any internal debate at all. I mean, holy fucking smurfberries, Batman, the entire country, from top to bottom, was utterly, unselfreflectingly racist!
Here, I think it is just a few select posters, and they get disrespected. Honesty didn’t get pitted like adaher because, ISTM, he wasn’t regarded as a complete moron. (no offense adaher, stick around and be wrong some more) Honesty even changed my mind at least once that I remember. I don’t see why Honesty felt this way about the SDMB, but again, I didn’t follow him very closely.
Ah well. I hope his career is successful and that he finds a nice boyfriend that makes him feel secure and good about himself and his place in the world. So long, bud. Here’s one person who is cool with black people, and gays. Whatever.
