That’s the sole example I came in here to post. I saw a behind-the-scenes documentary a few years back that went into all the things that went wrong with the making of that video. Billy came across as clearly understanding that the concept was shit, but somewhat naively believed the director when he claimed that things would look all different in camera.
I thought this had long been acknowledged as the most unintentionally “goofiest” dancing by a couple of admired and respected rock and rollers (Mick Jagger & David Bowie)
Before he was an actor, he trained as a professional dancer. That said, at least a little goofiness must be expected when performing dance moves while suspended in mid-air.
I thought that was genius! I wasn’t very familiar with Christopher Walken when I first saw that video in the days, but he was the creepy guy from “Pulp Fiction” that had kept a goddamn watch in his ass for years, and now he is dancing like Baryshnikov to a Fatboy Slim song. Mind blown.
This isn’t goofy at all. The guy could (can) dance better than almost anyone else.
Whole lotta goofiness going on, but I was thinking about the thing he does positioning his arms parallel to each other (and the ground), starting around 1:20. Not sure if that qualifies as a “dance move”…
The dancing by the band members in this video for “Hot for Teacher” by Van Halen is definitely in the “what were they thinking” category, should be queued to start at 2:12
I remember reading that Pat Benetar loathed the video for Love is a Battlefield because of the goofy dance she had to (starts at 3:21). At the time she was my hero and even had to agree that shimmy did not become her.
I listen to a lot of punk, watch a lot of punk videos, go to a lot of punk shows…and I feel like a traitor when I say that skanking will always look a little silly to me.
I also can’t do it because I’m uncoordinated af so take that for what it’s worth. It might just be jealousy.
