Google App (Chrome)

On Chrome, I was invited to install the SDMB app (in the address bar, right side). I did so and it launched a dedicated window with SDMB-specific menus and buttons. It didn’t behave very well (I am on Linux with a heavily-tweaked environment). Can any of the POTB elaborate on this app? Anyone else install it?

I have the app on my tablet. Seems to work fine.

I installed it on my Chromebook. It didn’t seem to “do” much beyond launching the Dope in a separate window. I didn’t notice any misbehavior, but I only played with it for a minute or two before uninstalling it.

I’m using a Chrome-based browser, Slimjet. I also noticed tiny icon in the address bar with an offer to install the app, but I ignored it.

It seems that the app is not made by Discourse itself, but by a third party.

One of the Discourse techs said that it’s just a wrapper for a browser, poorly rated, and not necessary.

Discourse is designed to work on tablets and mobile, and it’s best to use a normal browser. There’s no advantage to using the app.

Good to know. Thank you! We might want to put this in one of the stickies.

It’s harmless. I like seeing it in my app pile on my tablet.
I’ve not had the new Dope on the laptop yet. It’s new and I’m not comfortable with it yet.
