Google Beta

When I first joined up this Usenet service, I understood that because it was in the “Beta” stage my posts could take between 3 and 9 hours to appear, but now it is sometimes a day or longer before it shows. Anyone have the scoop? Layoffs, maybe?

Thanks

?? Most usenet posts appear almost immediately for most newservers. What are you referring to. Posts to newgroups or something different?

Yes, NG’s, astro. Sorry if I was unclear about that. Google took over the old DejaNews.

A much better approach is to use your own ISP’s Usenet servers (at least, if they carry the newsgroups you’re interested in). Free newsreaders abound, and someone at your ISP ought to be able to tell you how to set one up. Part of your fees go to maintaining those servers, anyway, so you might as well use them. I personally find them better and faster than Web-based newsgroup services like Google, MailandNews, etc.

Shortly before Google bought Deja and screwed things up for a while, I was doing some informal testing between my work newsserver, Deja, and my AOL newsgroup stuff here at home. Deja, more often than not, was over 12 hours behind the other two. I haven’t “tested” Google in this way, because nowadays I pretty much only use it to read messages more than 30 days old (thanks be that Google fulfilled the promise to restore the big archives - I was getting sick of going to a friend’s slow personal archive to see messages more than two years old).
