Google Street View came to my town!

Mundane? Check. Pointless? Check. Must share? You betcha!

They must have toodled through at 6 AM on a Sunday or something, though, 'cause there’s no people anywhere. If I wanted to think about it I could date exactly when they came through, because I had a big sign in my yard for the Design Review Board hearing before I could build my garage.

It’s kind of weird and creepy.

They finally came to Jackson as well. I looked for our house but the trees along the road kind of obscure it.

One odd thing: the photos are extremely hazy. Maybe it was raining - but they aren’t very clear.

Example.

The just put up my area too, Palm Beach county in South Florida. Kinda neat.

My roomate is mildly annoyed that you can see his car in front of my flat when you street view my street.

Man, if I ever saw that I’d be compelled to follow them around so I could be in as many of the pictures as possible. “Hey look, it’s that naked guy riding a Vespa again!”

Interesting…

A few weeks ago I was driving down the street and saw an un-marked van with a blinking arrow mounted on top, and a guy hanging out the top with a video camera. The van was driving extremely slow down the street. I decided this must have been the Google Street View team.

However, I just went on Google Maps and typed in my city’s name…the little flag marker actually ended up exactly where I had seen the van. But, there’s no street view for that part of town. There’s street view everywhere just west of where I saw the van but absolutely no street view east of the van or near my house (south of the van). :frowning:

I want to look out my window using my computer, dammit!

When I check my address, I get my next door neighbor’s house. Is there any way to get this corrected?

Sure, but you’d have to buy his house and move, so most people don’t bother.

You can do it yourself if you have a Google account – I did. Just search for your address. The little bubble that pops up should have an “Edit” link.

Looks more like they needed to clean the camera windows on the van…

I’m pretty sure they came by my house on a Monday after 9AM but before 3PM, because there’s no cars in the driveway and the trash bin is on the curb but empty.

Huh, they must have come through my neighborhood last summer–the lawn is burnt to a crisp. On a Wednesday, since the trash bin is sitting out.

Does anyone know when they’re going to do the DC area?

Seriously? They did Columbia, South Carolina before our nation’s capital?

There were white directional arrows in my street so I could go back and forth. There’s a sun flare in my driveway, but I don’t mind because you can’t see that the porch needs to be painted.

I don’t know, maybe the Secret Service has ordered them to skip DC. I wish I knew one way or the other.

They even have Boise, FFS.

I’ve seen cars with the Google logo on them with what appeared to be several camera lenses mounted on the roof crusing around Arlington a couple times but I don’t know if those are for Street View. One of them did a loop around the block where I work.

The directional arrows are just for moving up and down the street. The “Edit” link lets you tell Google the address is in the wrong place, and where it ought to be.

Uh oh…I hope this thread didn’t inspire this:

Nah, Google a little more sophisticated than that. Here’s one of their vehicles, though they’ve used others.

Here are reflections of a Mapjack car and another Google van.

Mapjack does street view, but way, way better, IMO. However it’s only in a couple of locales. They will also go where cars can’t.
