Google your own name with quotes. On what page does an entry about you actually appear?

“First Middle Last” returns 26 hits, with the first and third being me. About 1/4 of them are me.

“First M Last” returns a (clearly fallacious) million hits. 4th one is me. A few more further on. That sort of tells you how common my first and last names are. Middle is common too, just apparently not the combo.

“F M Last” finally returns the Wikipedia article on my most well known research result (published under that name), but 20 or so entries down.

When I do “firstname lastname”, there are 166,000 hits. I don’t come up until page 9. Damn those other guys who stole my name!

When I try this with my wife, she gets 1,330 hits, with 4 of them about her on page 2.

First out of nine. When I was at a program in Israel years back, I made some remark to the effect that it was really fun, and they’ve had my “blurb” on their website ever since.

All combinations of my name / surname yield results exclusively about me or nothing at all.

“Firstname Lastname” for me yields about 143 results, and every single one of them is me except for a few pages that seem to be some kind of search engine spam that just lists a bunch of names.

I may very well be the only person in the world with my specific name, which is funny because neither my first name nor may last is particularly uncommon, at least in the specific region of origin for each.

“FirstName Lastname” has most of the first page about me. Only one post on the first page (the 9th one) isn’t me, and happens to be a Finnish hotel with the same name as my last name. 8 out of 10 hits on the second page are me, then 10 out of 10 on the third and fourth pages of hits. I didn’t search farther than that.

If I google my name without the quotes, I have to go to page 3 before I find a hit that isn’t me (it’s that Finnish hotel again).

I very rarely use my middle name or initial for anything, so I wasn’t too surprised that “First Middle Last” has only one entry, which is me on some site that lists people by e-mail, phone numbers, and addresses. It has my current address correct, and lists a bunch of old e-mail addresses, none of which are current.

Googling my doper name gets me a couple of pages of hits from the dope, mythbusters, and a PLC message board I have posted to. Being the remarkably creative person that I am (ahem…) I use the same name pretty much everywhere on the net.

Google also thinks I want to enter my doper name without the underscores. Rather alarmingly, it posts two links from this suggestion, and both of them have to do with Barbie.

All of the first page and second pages and most of the third are about me, and they’re all either neutral or good things. This is deliberate. If there should ever be something bad about me, prospective employers etc. might well miss it amongst the good stuff.

Real name: 1st page is all genealogy, but I show up on the second page for something I submitted to the Evil Overlord List.

What I go by: All the results seem to be for me.

Silver Tyger Girl: is all SD related stuff and the first entry is from my livejournal.

Silvercat: my livejournal shows up on the first page

“First name last name” I don’t show up until page three. Weirdly, my Facebook and MySpace don’t show up at all.
“First name middle initial last name” they’re all me. Same if I use my whole middle name.
As “Surly Chick” I show up as the first entry (Dope) and there’s some bitch on Facebook that stole my name!

First M. Last: Page 1 first two items, 5 of 10 total

First Middle Last: Entire first page

First Last: Searched a few pages and got bored…

Formal first-middle-last: #1 is me
Formal first-last: #3 is me
Informal first-last: #1 is me
SDMB username: #1 is me

Note: For formal/informal, think Catherine/Cathy or similar. I almost never use the formal version of my name, but do have a publication under that name that gets cited.

“Firstname Surname” yields eight pages of results, every one of them being me. That said, though, I have an unusual name, teach, and have published a number of articles and things.

The search did reveal, annoyingly enough, that someone’ seems to have reproduced one of my articles on a Facebook page. (A few years ago, someone was using one of my CD reviews in its entirety for his eBay sales of said CD, which I also found irksome, but it’s hard to control, since a lot of journals have now gone electronic as well as hard copies.)

Just my name without the quotes: even more results because I go by Firstname MiddleName Surname sometimes, but around page 8 other people start to appear. Jeez, how many of those ‘rate my professor’ type things are out there? My students don’t want me to know what they think about me right before I start the last, mad paper/presentation/exam mark-a-thon of the term!

I have an unusual name, which I share with my father. The first two pages of google, without quotes, were all either about me or my dad. Mostly my dad, who sometimes lectures on foreign policy.

My full name gets no hits at all. I have an unusual middle name, and may well be the only person in the world with my same full name. Since I don’t go by my full name it doesn’t appear on the Web anywhere.

My not-that-uncommon first and last name (no middle initial) gets a lot of hits. I appear on the third page, thanks to the website of the place where I work.

My first and last name with my middle initial only gets one screen of results, and I’m on there thanks to a Web archive of a listserv I used to be on…in the '90s! This is kind of embarrassing since I was a teenager then. I hope people who know me aren’t coming across these, although they’d have to know me fairly well to be sure it was the same person.

The fourteenth entry is me referenced on my employer’s web site. There was an art deco sculptor with my first name/middle intial/last name who did some very cool work. Most of the first thirteen entries are about him. There’s also some big deal surgeon who has the same name as me who has published articles in medical journals.

256 hits for my first and last name, most from the first 3 pages are me, a couple from my dad (I’m Jr.), a couple from some long-lost relatives in downstate Illinois.

One is the results from the last triathlon I raced back in 2001. Snif.

I post under my own name a lot. It reduces the temptation to flame people if I can’t hide behind a screen name.

Walt

I have a pretty uncommon name (I suspect it’s unique), so every result that comes up is either something I’ve written or is a link to something I’ve written. I’m actually also an auto-complete suggestion, which tickles me a little.

My full name gets two results, and the second one is my graduation announcement in my local newspaper. The first is a graduation announcement for someone in Delaware.

Without the middle name, I get 2,070 responses, and it takes until page 2 (result 11), which is me responding to a bug report in a Linux app. Number 16 is bug I helped fix that I gave permission to use my real name.

Without quotes, I show up as #7 on the first page. Just first or last name finds nothing.

Funnily, just a few years ago and not only would you find everything I’ve ever done on the first few pages, but you could even find photos of me on the first page of Google Image results. (I don’t show up at all, now.)

I didn’t bother with my middle names, because I’m reasonably sure it will get no hits whatsoever.

My first and last name in quotes got seven pages, mostly me, with a bunch of Welsh rugby players and a Lappland dogsled business owner sprinkled throughout.

Some weird links that were about me, though. Someone posted pictures to Flickr from a TV show I did (but only one of the episodes I was on), and a whole lot of patent summary sites that I’d never seen before. Also, some trademark registrations that I don’t remember being included on (although it’s from a company that I worked at, so it’s certainly plausible). And a bunch of archived Usenet threads from the early 90’s (including the EFF!).

Common Name (short first, + last) – I’m on the second page.
Full first + last – I lost interest after about page 5
Full first, middle initial, + last – I’m the first 6 links.
