I know I’ve become more partisan in a liberal direction, but that’s mostly in response to the GOP becoming absolutely batshit crazy. Of COURSE I’m going to go all NO-COMPROMISE when the compromise is between an actual workable policy decision and whether or not God created the world in 6 days.

This number jumped out at me from the new Washington Post/ABC News poll: It showed that, among Latinos, 50 percent say it doesn’t matter who wins the Senate come November. And among those who do think it will matter, twice as many say it would be a good thing (30 percent) if the GOP took over as say it would be a bad thing (15 percent).

This is a demographic, we will remind you, that voted 71-27 for President Obama just two years ago. And only 15 percent are concerned about a GOP-controlled Senate.

While there is a fairly big margin of error (plus/minus 10 points) in this sub-sample, those are still striking numbers – and they comport nicely with the idea of Hispanics’ declining faith in the Democratic Party. And if you can’t get voters to believe something will change, it’s hard to make a convincing case to get them to vote.

The border is not secure. Has illegal immigration slowed to a trickle? are we deporting people who overstay their visas illegally, the most prevalent form of illegal immigration?

Depends on the issue. The desire to live in a nation of laws that are actually enforced never changes. Once it does, our democracy is over, though.

Enforcing our duly enacted laws used to be a nonpartisan issue. At least until Democrats found political advantage in supporting the flouting of the law.

The Republicans are big time supporters of not funding the due process that many of the immigrants need, but do not get and then end up deported, you ignore that one of the most egregious offenses to the rule of law is the systematic denial of due process in immigrant detention centers across the country.

Not all Republicans agree that this inhumane position will drive the hispanics to support them.

Republicans have largely used the crisis to rail against Obama and call for strengthened border security. But conservative voices are starting to split as some Republicans worry they may be driving away Hispanic voters if they are viewed as lacking compassion for threatened children.

Virginia Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said in a statement earlier this week that the Obama administration should be “cracking down on rampant asylum fraud.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry even floated conspiracy theories that the Obama administration may be complicit in an inside job to open the borders to thousands of immigrants. Other conservatives warn the crisis is a back-channel maneuver for the administration to offer “amnesty” to thousands of future Democrats.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham on Wednesday warned that if Republicans block the president’s proposal to boost funding, the stunt could backfire ahead of the midterm elections. “If we do that, then we’re going to get blamed for perpetuating the problem,” Graham told reporters.

Ironically, it’s conservative firebrands like Glenn Beck who are running in the opposite direction. Beck will be visiting the Texas border next week to bring food, soccer balls and teddy bears for the children there. In the time since Beck announced the trip, the conservative TV and radio host has faced intense backlash from his own loyal following, a move he concedes could sink his career.

“I’ve never taken a position more deadly to my career than this — and I have never, ever taken a position that is more right than this,” he said this week.

Sealed borders don’t stop people with visas. The border is on the outside.

The SDMB, collectively, exults in liberal groupthink and liberal superiority. It ignores liberal bad arguments unless they’re awful and leaps on tiny flaws in conservative bad arguments, and then denies any extant bias.

That kind of behavior motivates me.

Just out of curiosity, what does it motivate you to do? Just keep posting on a message board that has zero impact on American culture? Or are you now interested in something like running for office yourself, or perhaps donating to various campaigns you might not have donated to before?

Those are positive things. If the GOP Senate does nothing else, ensuring that the federal bench is not polluted with “living constitution” types is reward enough.

For what it’s worth, it is by no means certain. Many races are close and turnout is the key.

Given thata prominent GOP candidate for Senate won’t say what he wants a GOP Senate to do, you can hardly blame his supporters for going that way as well.

IOW, we want to make sure Presidents of *our *party get to appoint judges who will legislate from the bench our way, but we don’t want Presidents of the other party to get to appoint judges who will legislate from the bench their way.

I’d missed the fact that the tens and tens of thousands of kids from south America who have come over in the past year all had visas. Why does the news never mention that?

Reasonable people can disagree on whether the Constitution is an infallible unchanging document produced by infallible men with Jesus at their sides or if it should be reinterpreted as times change. Since there will never again be a Republican president, those who share your beliefs will get fewer nominations.
