Gordie Howe's number gets retired

Possibly the last. They interviewed him on tv, he seemed somewhat surprised. After retiring with the NHL, he signed with the then Houston Aeros of the WHA, where he played for 5 seasons with his sons.

I remember seeing the old Aeros play in the Sam Houston Coliseum, so it brings back memories for me. I, unaware of Gordie Howe, remember this older guy with a comb-over who did not wear a helmet really taking the game to all the younger players. They won at least 2 WHA championships with Gordie Howe.

The Aeros were revived in 1994 in the IHL. A minor league hockey association made up of farm teams for the NHL and independent teams. The Aeros are an independent team.

Just another honor from the man known as Mr. Hockey (Wayne Gretsky must be Mr. Hockey II).

And I will always remember Gordie in the great Simpsons episode when Bart gets dention and Mrs. Krabappel is writing personals and Bart write back, pretending to be Woodrow Wilson, but sends her Gordie Howe’s picture. At the end of the episode we get Gordie’s stats!

Just to add that the Aeros are now in the AHL (the IHL is gone) and are the top farm club for the Minnesota Wild.
