Possibly the last. They interviewed him on tv, he seemed somewhat surprised. After retiring with the NHL, he signed with the then Houston Aeros of the WHA, where he played for 5 seasons with his sons.
I remember seeing the old Aeros play in the Sam Houston Coliseum, so it brings back memories for me. I, unaware of Gordie Howe, remember this older guy with a comb-over who did not wear a helmet really taking the game to all the younger players. They won at least 2 WHA championships with Gordie Howe.
The Aeros were revived in 1994 in the IHL. A minor league hockey association made up of farm teams for the NHL and independent teams. The Aeros are an independent team.
