Probably a name only Canadians of a certain age will recognize. He was an excellent hockey player, a terrific hockey analyst, and above all a passionate teacher of the game. Add to that he was an MP and someone who tirelessly raised money for many charities, I’d like to raise a glass to Howie. RIP
I remember him mainly from tips he gave young players, when I was a young player. I don’t remember his career but he seemed a kindly man.
I missed this. It is very sad news. I never knew him as a player but do remember his time on HNIC.
I remember the name from my childhood here in the US, as I think he had a between-periods segment on the NBC national games in the early-mid 70s called “The Howie Meeker Hockey Clinic,” IIRC
