In response to this thread, that I managed to miss a while back:
I’m a little behind the times, here, and I just heard Dare for the first time, and saw the video. Noodle’s my girl! The whole thing was, indeed, awesome. (Anyone else feel like they time-travelled a bit back to baggy days, for a moment? )
I’ve been holding out on buying Demon Days, waiting to see if I liked anything besides Feel Good, Inc. I’m leaning towards purchasing the album. Has anyone else picked this one up? What did you think of it?
Buy it. Now. Seriously. Buy it. Now. The only track on it that I ever skip is ‘intro’, which is rather (deliberately) cacophonous. Fire Coming Out of a Monkey’s Head is way brilliant. OK, White Light could be a little on the annoying side, too, if it’s not your thing, I suppose, but I like it.
The one problem I have for it is it’s not technically a CD, it has an obnoxious copy protection scheme on it, which is a bit of a pain if you’re playing it on a computer (attempts to install its own player - just ignore it any open it from your favourite player). Beyond that…totally worth it.
If you keep buying broken discs like that, they’ll keep making them. Don’t buy it unless the store’s return policy will let you return it for cash or store credit (not just an exchange for the same broken disc).
If you’re not sure about the return policy at your favorite store, don’t be afraid to ask the manager. “I’m ready to buy this CD, but I noticed there’s no Compact Disc logo on it. Doesn’t that mean it doesn’t meet the official CD specifications, and if so, what recourse do I have when I find out it won’t play in my car stereo / computer / MP3-CD player? Can I try it in one of your computers here before I buy it, to make sure it’ll work?”
Well, I finally went and bought the album - da-yum, it sounds good on my headphones - anyway, mine didn’t try to install anything on my computer at all.
It came with a bonus DVD, which also didn’t try to install anything on my comp. You can choose to go to the “secret” web page (where you proceed to grab a crowbar and… well, I haven’t figured it out yet), or play the DVD. However, the sound only works on the title screen, and after that, it goes silent. I have yet to try it out in the “regular” DVD player in the living room. Very cute. Only wish it had the Dare video. Maybe it’s available, if I can just figure out what to do with that crowbar I’m suddenly equipped with…
Also says there’s a free bonus track to download. Again with the crowbar…
Just wanted to add in my reccomendation for anyone else who hasn’t got it; Get It! It’s a great album.
(Also, if you’re not aware, the dude playing the, well, head, is Shaun Ryder, famous and infamous singer with the Happy Mondays. Just added recognition for british fans, really.)
Nope, she’s a young Japanese girl. When they began, she was around ten years old, but they’ve all aged. I think she’s around fifteen, now.
Of course, she’s a fictional character, her “speaking” voice is done by Haruka Kuroda (not Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto, as is popularly believed, however, Miho did do vocals for Noodle on the first album - the single *19-2000 * has her on it). Noodle’s “singing” voice is done by various guest artist. As far as I can tell, according to the credits that came with the DVD for Demon Days, Noodle’s voice in Dare is done by someone named Rosie Wilson. I’ve never heard of her.
What I enjoyed about the clips from the newest album is that Noodle has aged. They’ve been gone for, what, four or five years? So Noodle is that much older. That’s awesome cool.
Maybe I’m hopelessly dense, or maybe it’s just that I’m more a Blur girl than aGorillaz girl, but what is Dare about? I’ve seen the videoclip several times and I still don’t get why she’s dancing around a giant head.
I don’t think this has reached zombie-dom yet, and I just found this thread again, and had originally missed **Sarah Woodruff’s ** post - sorry, Sarah.
I can only give my opinion, of course, but I don’t think the video (or any of their videos) are supposed to mean too much of anything. The giant head in Noodle’s closet is Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays (think “Madchester” era), Black Grape). I remember reading an “interview” with Noodle, in which she said the idea behind the video was that she wanted to make something herself, because she thought the boys had misbehaved in the “Feel Good Inc.” video. So she set up her own cameras and made the whole thing herself, apparently busting out her handy Shaun Ryder head that she keeps in her closet for just such an occasion. As you can see in the video, Russel is er… busy in the bathroom, and 2D is listening from upstairs - they weren’t invited to be in the video.
And of course, in the end, it’s supposed to look like it was all Murdoc’s nightmare.
