Alright, my girlfriend is an incredibly avid reader of these boards and told me that this was the place to go for help. Last night I ordered some late night food from Downtown Pizzeria in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Since I had been to the bars that night, I didn’t have any cash left so I paid with my credit card. The delivery guy shows up, takes an imprint of my card and tells me to sign the form. Pretty standard so far, but here’s where it gets crazy. The delivery guy tells me to sign the receipt but doesn’t have a pen, so I turn away from the door and look for something to write with. I can’t find anything, but by this time the guy had gone to his car and came back with a pen. I sign and he goes on his way. He’s gone a few minutes when I realize he never gave me my card back. I call up to the place and there’s no reply. I wake up the next morning and start calling as soon as I can. No answer. Of course by this time I had already cancelled my card. I get off work and call back and finally get a response. I tell the lady who picks up that I have a problem and want to speak with the server who took my order last night. I give her the name and she says oh…that girl hasn’t worked here for months. They just use that number to ring up orders. At this point I ask to speak with the manager. So I talk with this guy and tell him the situation. I describe the driver and he says there are 7 that fit that description and he’ll look into it. He calls me back and says the guy who he thinks delivered food to me is coming in to work in a few minutes and he’ll call me back. Another 15 minutes goes by and he calls me back. Now he says that the driver has no idea what I’m talking about and he needs to go through his ‘database’ to find the exact paperwork, never mind that I have all the information in front of me. He tells me this will take him another 20-30 minutes and he’ll call back. I get impatient at the 20 min mark and call him. He tells me that they’ve called the owner in and he’ll be there in an hour. He tells me the owner will look through the database and figure out who delivered to me. When I point out that is what he said he was doing he tells me that he doesn’t have access to the database, he was just looking through paperwork and that all further communication will be with the owner. The owner calls me about 45min later and tells me that he has spoken with the driver and the driver told the owner that he gave the card back to me and that I lost it and the rest was my problem. The owner assured me that the driver just ‘wasn’t that kind of guy’ and that he believes him over me. I say that this was a pretty horrible business practice and what does he plan to do about it. He tells me that he’s going to do nothing about it. When I tell him that I now have every intention of calling the Better Business Bureau on him, he instantly becomes belligerent and begins cursing at me, saying ‘he doesn’t need my fucking business’ and to ‘fuck off’ and then he hangs up on me.
My question is (yes, there was a point to this )what exactly can I do here? Is making a complaint at the BBB all I can do? I am incredibly angry now and any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the insanely long post and thanks for any replys.
It’s not that long, although a few paras would have helped.
Frankly as it’s your word against his I don’t like your chances of there being any actual action possible. But absolutely report it to the BBB and any other appropriate authorities; at least that way if it happens again there’ll be a pattern starting to form and action may ensue.
This probably isn’t what you’re looking for, but here goes:
The gist of your story is that you went out drinking (I’m inferring here), came home with the munchies, and called out for food. When the delivery came, you paid with a credit card. You say that the driver never gave you your card back; the driver says he did. You’ve cancelled your credit card.
I’m sorry. That’s a pain to have to wait for your new credit card to come.
Speaking of pain, you want to inflict some on this company. Unlike Askance, I don’t see a basis for doing that. Sometimes, bad things happen, and it really isn’t anyone’s fault. Chalk this one up to experience (never turn your back on your credit card), and be grateful that vast amounts were not run up on said card before you cancelled it. (And search your pockets; the card may yet turn up.)
As a final note, consider calling the food place back. Speak to the owner. Apologize for your intemperate words, and explain that you were angry because your credit card disappeared during the transaction and has not shown up again. Ask him to call you if for some reason it does turn up at his place of business.
You lost your card. It’s not the end of the world.
You reported it lost. Hopefully there wasn’t any illegitimate usage prior to your doing so. If pizza delivery driver didn’t intend to take your card and he didn’t try to use it then you should be thankful that it didn’t turn out worse than it did.
If the manager’s response wasn’t to your liking 0 - don’t but pizza there again. Make a BBB reort if you need to. Frankly, I don’t check with the BBB before ordering pizza.
Pikadrew, I removed the phone number you published. You didn’t ask for anyone to call that number, but we don’t want any type of unapproved (and in this case, possibly harassing) phone campaigns to pop up any more than we do e-mail campaigns.
Thanks for the quick replys. I’m pretty positive I didn’t lose the card. I tore my place apart looking for it and even checked some unlikely spots (the bag of food, the fridge). My main problem is with the way I was treated by the business. I already ordered the new card, and made sure there were no transactions made on it. It’s just that the owner of the place was so rude about the whole situation and didn’t really seem to care about it. I suppose it’s just one more reason to hate the hell that is South Florida.
Consider that the worst-case scenario is that this guy deliberately took your card and lied to the manager about it. The card’s canceled, he knows it’s canceled, and there’s about zero chance he’ll give himself away. Calling the BBB or the police or anyone on him ain’t gonna do much.
The store owner was rude to you, but it sounds like you were kinda rude to him. Go elsewhere for pizza and chalk it up to people suckin.
Still, it sucks that the owner automatically believes the driver and doesn’t consider the possibility that the driver may have done this to other people.
