Gotta Pick a Republican for 2024- Whom Do You Pick?

You mean the guy who threw a hissie fit and effectively closed a bridge to Manhattan because the local officials didn’t support him? You mean the guy who closed the public beaches on account of the pandemic and then took himself and family to one of the them? You mean the guy who prevented a new train tunnel to NY even though there is a non-zero chance that the old one will be forced to close with serious damage to the whole US economy? You think that guy is the adult in the room? Really?

Romney, mainly bc at one time I thought the whole world was going to shit because I thought he might be elected president.

God I was so naive.

Yes, him. Because Trump. Because who else (whom else?)

Your missing many facts about the tunnel. The deal was fucked up beyond hope.

The beach thing is pretty minor.

Bridgegate though shows how petty he and his inner circle are.

But compared to the other potential candidates he is better.

Sadly, he IS the adult in the room, at least compared to the other Republicans who are running.

Yes, among those running. A sad lot. What I would like to see is one among the governors and ex-governors of VT, NH, MA, and MD.

I suspect it used to be the case that Republican governors tended to be more moderate overall compared to their legislative party members, because when you had to appeal to an entire state you had to win over a diverse number of voters. I don’t think moderates are easily found among Republicans at any position anymore.

I met Sununu when he was running for his first term as governor of NH (I was still living there at the time). I asked him if he would take a stand against Trump, and he said “I will support the Republican party nominee.”

I told him he wouldn’t get my vote precisely because he was putting the party above sanity.

You have to consider what the rest of the room looks like.

Christie is the Albert Speer of the current Republican party.

Yes, he’s an adult who makes mistakes, who is imperfect, and who I disagree with on a great many things. He’s also an adult who competently responded to a devastating hurricane, didn’t play politics and worked with members of the opposing party to do what was right for his residents. He’s a throwback to a more gentile political time, when the other side was just wrong instead of being lunatics.
