I saw lots of good looking loaves of bread at Whole Foods.
Muffins too.
But how does it compare to a dedicated bakery? The bread tasted not as good as it looked but maybe I got a bad one (tasted plain)

How does it compare to a Bakery? Which bakery do you mean? Dedicated bakeries can suck ass, or be amazing, in comparison to WF.
At any rate, there’s no objective measure of bread betterness. It’s just all about what you prefer. If you find WF bread is not to your preference, you can seek your bready goodness elsewhere.
Personally, where I live now I have lots of better, and particularly equal-but-cheaper options, for bread. However, I have lived in other places where this was not the case and a WF was a godsend in terms of obtaining quality bread.
I don’t think Whole Foods bakeries are very good. Sure, their stuff looks great, but I’m always disappointed when I buy it. I don’t think you got a bad loaf; it’s just the way they are.
Well, they certainly sell A LOT OF pretty decent bread, if that’s what you’re driving at.
This. I always get sucked into buying something there that looks amazing, get it home, and am completely underwhelmed. My regular grocery stores seems to do a better job with baked goods (Harris Teeter and Wegmans).
Agreed. I generally find the bread adequate, but the few desserts I’ve tried have truly sucked. And the prepared foods are very, very bland.
Whole Foods doesn’t have “in house” bakeries nor recipes that they use nationally. They normally buy out or contract with a local bakery to provide baked items. It all depends on where you are and who the local provider is.
FWIW, the gluten-free cookies I’ve gotten from my local WF have been quite good. Their GF bread was gross, though, and I haven’t tried their other GF products.
Yeah, this is totally my experience with them. Their deli and bakery stuff looks soooo good, but it’s always kinda bland and dull. The exception being their salad bar. But really, that’s not really cooking, it’s just… a salad bar.
I came in to second this. I don’t have Harris Teeter where I live, but I do have a Wegman’s, and I’ve yet to be disappointed with any of their baked goods or prepared foods. They’re about the only supermarket that gets take-out right.
