Governor Christie has nominated a Muslim judge to New Jersey’s state supreme court, and is defending this action against conservative critics (who are not specifically named in the article).
I’m heartened to see someone like Christie - who I normally don’t agree with on much at all - standing up to the morons in his party. His remarks in the video are unequivocal, and I agree completely. Good for him. I’m a contributor to the Stupid Republican Idea of the Day thread, and I’m glad to be able to post something positive for a change.
Two things though…
I wonder how much heat this will really stir up among conservatives. This Sharia law nonsense strikes me as close to a fringe belief of Rick Santorum and those of his ilk.
One can’t help but wonder if in another day or two he will be stepping back and re-phrasing his remarks to appease his critics. I hope not.
I just saw this article and was also pleased. It’s nice to know that occasionally there are people on both sides of the aisle that know what is the right thing to do.
It’s worth watching the interview. He doesn’t mince words, calling those who opposed Mohammed “crazies,” and noting that he’s “tired of dealing with crazies.” It goes on for a few minutes.
I’m likewise pretty far to the left, so it’s very nice to see some sanity in a Republican politician, particularly one whose name comes up so often in relation to 2012.
“I’m tired of dealing with the crazies” could be a bumper sticker for mainstream Republican politicians in general these days. It’s definitely refreshing to hear somebody (especially a Republican) call them out in no uncertain terms.
Nitpick: he’s been nominated for a Superior Court seat, which is the intermediate court in New Jersey. It would be highly unusual for anyone to be appointed directly to a state supreme court without prior bench experience.
This editorial points out a few things that Christie was probably reacting to, including conservative bloggers and the GOP hopefuls.
This should give me hope, but it’s so ridiculous that someone has to say it and that it’s so fucking unusual that it’s news. The Republican party is not a party I could vote for right now.
Christie does what he says he’ll do, or at least tries very hard - that’s fairly rare. You may like it, you may hate it, and he’s far from perfect in any light, but he’s a stand-up guy.
Never make it as a Presidential hopeful, though - He’s too definate in his ideas of right and wrong, just and unjust, good and bad. Only weasels can get elected, any more.
