can anyone tell me the actuall formula to figuring out my gpa out of my grades
if my 98 is from a 3 credit class and a 99 from a 2 credit class. what do i get and how do I figure it out.
thanks
98 x 3 = 294
99 x 2 = 198
294 + 198 = 492
492/5 = 98.4
98=A=4.0
99=A=4.0
((4.03)+(4.02))/5=4.0
That’s your GPA
what do I do with the numbers because a 98.4 is still not a 4. anything. and I really have more grades to imput so how would you end up with like a 3.8 or 3.6if all of your grades were with in the a range?
do you then take that 98.4% and devide it into 4.
What constitutes an A in your classes? Does 99 mean you get an A? Does 95 mean you get an A or a B? Each class could be different. An 80 in one class might be an A, whereas in another class you might need a 97 to get an A.
Now to figure your GPA, you need to ONLY look at the A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s and F’s
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0
Convert all your letter grades to the appropriate number.
But…note that 5 credit class of A carries more weight than a 1 credit class of A.
SO you need to give more value to a 5 credit class than a 1 credit class. You do this by Taking the value from the grade (A=4 etc.) times the number of hours. SO the true value of your 5 credit class with an “A” is 54=20 and the true value of your 1 credit A is 14=4. You can now average the two classes where you add the true values together and divide by the total number of credit hours.
(20+4)/6 = 4.0
To test yourself on this. Lets say you have a 3 hour class that you get a B in; a 5 hour class you get a C in; and a 1 hour class you get a A in.
B class 33 = 9
C class 52 = 10
A class 1*4 = 4
Total true value is (9+10+4) =23
Total credit hours is (3 +5+1)= 9
GPA = 23/9 = 2.56
Go to whatever office compiles records at your high school and ask them how they calculate the G.P.A. (I presume you’re at a high school and not a college, but if you’re at a college, do the same thing.) There’s no way for us to figure out the precise formula that they are using. It’s not even clear if they are going to be averaging the 0 - 100 scores that you are quoting or the 0.0 to 4.0 scores that would be used if they give the grades as A though F.
Look at the letter grade you receive, that’s all that’s important.
A+ 4.33
A 4
A- 3.67
B+ 3.33
B 3
B- 2.67
C+ 3.33
C 3
C- 2.67
and so on
The formula is:
[(Grade X Weight) + (Grade X Weight) + … + (Grade X Weight)]/Total Weight = GPA
As for percentage to grade conversion, that’s typically up to the teacher (or department) and should be in your syllabus. If the Grade to percentage is a school wide thing then just use the percentage in my formula. It’ll spit out a final percentage which you can convert to a grade and find your GPA from that (a=4, b=3…f=0).
It is not completely standard to use the pluses and minuses in grades in the averaging. It differs from school to school. Go the office in your school that handles this, and don’t trust what people here say.
Indeed. My university counts a A+ as a 4.0, and not a 4.33. And many schools don’t use + or - grades at all, or they count them the same as a regular grade of that letter.
A GPA is a Grade Point Average. It would help if you told us if you’re confused about the grades, points, or averages.
I assume you know what your grade is (A, B-, C+, whatever your school does).
Somewhere in your syllabus or student handbook should be a chart that says how many points you get for that grade. That’s the number per credit. So let’s say a B+ is 3.33. If it’s a five-credit course, you take 3.33*5 for your total for that course.
Then you just average those numbers by totalling them and dividing by the number of credits you’ve taken. And there you go. You have an average of grade points- a GPA.
