Can’t seem to find him in search, maybe I’m doing something wrong, heh. :smack:

While I’m a little disappointed, I have to admit I kinda saw this coming. I noticed him being a jerk on a couple of occasions. And considering how often the guy posted, he was bound to screw up bad enough eventually. He started some interesting threads though.

His username is/was GrahamWellington, not Graham-space-Wellington.

What’s the addage about bright flames going out fast?

Ferchrissakes, his post average was over 11 per day. That’s a number I’d expect from our seasoned members, not a noob.

Egads, you are correct sir. Ironic (?) that his last post was on a thread about last words. Timely.

And appropriate.

So to summarize his offenses: He insulted someone in GD, an insult which carried some racial overtones, but was not out and out racist. He called someone a Bozo and somesuch while the travelling Carlos Castelenada thread was stopped over in Cafe Society. And he used the n-word in a rather gratutitous manner. Was the final one the brick that broke the camel’s back, so to speak?

My first thought was “Only a month, must be a sock/troll.” Then I thought (inexplicably)…

“I wonder if he got a refund on his subscription…”

Oh come on, Ray Charles could have seen this coming.

Could somebody clarify the third warning that he got? SkipMagic said not to use a certain word on the SDMB “just for the hell of it”.

What exactly does that mean? What counts as using it for the hell of it and what doesn’t?

My best guess is that it’s okay to use the word when discussing the word itself, but not discussing people.
So would it have been okay to use the word in the second sentence of this post in place of just saying “a certain word”?
Is it okay to use when quoting someone, or should it be edited out?
If it should be edited out, would an exception be made for CS when quoting literature?

It feels kind of strange to be asking this because it’s not like I’m really planning on using the word anyway.

And back on topic, I bet you mod and admin people are happy about his violations of the rules in the same way that Elliott Ness might have been happy about Al Capone committing tax fraud. Problem solved.
It really is best for Graham that he’s gone. He’s not the kind of person that would do well here.

Talon Karrde: I think you more-or-less just nailed it. He was acting like a jerk, and theoretically that’s all it takes, but we’ve let people slide by with a lot worse to their name. This time, the mods saw fit to nip this problem in the bud, before the Final Flameout and before the potentially serious kooky-legal-threat post.

This is as close to pre-emptive as SDMB bannings get, to my recollection.

I don’t entirely agree. I post a lot, but not because I’m seasoned but because I’m lazy and sometimes enjoy a few days off in a row which I happily spend posting away.

At least I stopped annoying everyone with my sig line.

If it’s an academic discussion of the word and not just gratuitously thrown into the post, then it’s a legitimate use for the purposes of this board; such an example would not be a violation of our “no hate speech” rule. Quoting someone who used “nigger” is also allowable (which should cover your Cafe Society question). What we really don’t want to see is casual use as if it were an accepted term.

Speaking of sig lines…

Sorry, I’ll go away now.

Tis’ a shame. Can’t he have second chance; he wasn’t usually a jerk and had started some excellent threads.
Besides the warnings are there other issues?
It seems like you have a “suspended” rule option available.
I witnessed the racism also, but was two incidents worth a banning? :frowning:
I thought his use of the “N” word was more of a generic term used to express “those who are **treated the worst ** in society” not in a derogatory manner.

If there were no other problems besides the 3 cites, perhaps this was an over-reaction?

Sorry, I’ve only been here a short time myself and am also very guilty of a high post count. I just think he might be deserving of the same treatment that others have gotten. I understand that there might be more to this than posted in the OP.

I disagree. He was more than your ordinary racist jerk; he was a “liberals are evil because they support blacks” jerk. He was also a sexist jerk; an “I know secret knowledge that I won’t tell you” jerk; and even an “I refuse to post threads in the right forum” jerk.

The mods and admins deserve a giant-size “Hooray” for this decision. Tumors need to be excised when small.

Check out the pit thread on this guy, jr. It’ll point you to some threads which demonstrate a fundamental disconnect.

Sorry: I posted this in the other thread:

I guess he was worse than I realized. So therefore there is more too it than the 3 links. :frowning:

Strange quoting myself
