Hi everyone,
this is a touch obscure, but is driving me crazy as I cannot recall the name. Who was the Grand Inquisitor of the Roman Inquisition in about 1600? He would have presided over the execution of Bruno. I also think he was the Grand Inquisitor before Bellamine if that helps.
Google has turned up nothing for me.
Thanks very much

G’day
I don’t know whom Robert Bellarmine succeeded as chief of the Roman Inquisition, but I do know that it was Bellarmine himself who (then being one of hte cardinals of the Congregation of the Holy Office) presided over Bruno’s trial.
Regards,
Agback
That is about all the info that I have as well.
I know that Bellarmine presided over that case, but I just can’t get the name of who was the Grand Inquisitor at the time.
It has been shitting me the last few weeks since I saw a show about whatever his name is on SBS.

This account of Bruno’s life mentions that the “Supreme Inquisitor” who asked in 1592 for him to be brought to Rome was Cardinal Santaseverina. His name also appears as one of the inquistors in the 1599 trial document they quote further down. This is Giulio Antonio Santorio, who lives on until 1602. There’s a brief biography of him here, but that’s in German.
