Grapefruit Juice causing respiratory problems?

This is a bit of a strange question, but here goes. I like to drink grapefruit juice. I usually have one glass a day with supper. Immediately after drinking it, and for about half an hour, I have a strange “rasping” in my lungs. Anyone who has had pneumonia knows what I’m talking about. Also, I cough up lots of phlegm. After the 30 mins or so has passed, it goes away.

This only happens after I drink grapefruit juice, and there is no other time it happens, so I’m pretty sure the grapefruit juice is causing it. What I’d like to know is: has anyone else experienced this? Could it be some kind of allergic reaction? Should I stop drinking it?

Thanks.

Yeah, it sure could be an allergic reaction. But maybe something else. Are you on any medication? Grapefruit juice reacts badly with many medicines.

Should you stop drinking it? Yeah - it’s a good idea to stay away from anything that screws up your breathing.

It sounds like you’re allergic. I’m allergic to grapefruit and most other citrus fruits. It gives me flu-like symptoms.

Breathing problems are a common symptom of allergies. I would say, don’t eat grapefruit again. Also, I had a bad allergic reaction to raspberries. The allergiest I went to said people who are allergic to citrus are generally allergic to raspberries.
