Topical Citrus Allergies

An acquaintance tells me that citrus allergies are fairly common, and I can’t seem to find any information about how common. I’m specifically looking for cites about incidence of reaction to topical application, not internal, and specifically lemon juice if that’s available.

Well, I have two coworkers that are allergic to oranges. One so allergic that someone peeling an orange in the room makes her throat swell up. The other can’t touch the skin or she’ll break out into a major rash. Before then I’d never heard of anyone being allergic to citrus.

I have the same issue with grapefruit as EvilTOJ’s co-worker. I can’t pass the grapefruit in the grocery store without feeling my throat close up, and the one time I got grapefruit juice on my hands, I passed out. I also am very sensitive to other citrus, but not to that extent. If I get orange juice on my hands, I get a red welt. But it is less so than when I was a child.
