Graphic new FDA cig. warning labels show diseased lungs, more. . .

Wow. This is huge. The FDA will require horribly graphic warning labels on cigarette packs that show everything from tracheotomy smokers to diseased lungs to corpses with toe tags.

You have to check this out.

Welcome to Canadian cigarette packages

Yeah, it’s really worked in Canada, hasn’t it?

Looks to me like it did Not solely the packaging of course but still.

I haven’t smoked in nearly 2 decades (although I still use a nicotine substitute), but now I’ll have to go out and collect the whole set. I wonder if the graphic will be the same size on all cig packs - or will it be bigger on 100mm varieties than on the regular size. (I’m only half kidding btw)

Speaking of Canadian cig packages, there was a report on CBC recently that the Canadian Federal Government has decided not to require larger warnings. It seems that the large graphic warnings were more effective when they first came out, but not so much now.

You become desensitized to it pretty quickly. They came out when I still smoked years and years ago, and I didn’t notice them any more after a few months.

Yeah, I certainly would say it wasn’t the packaging. When they first came out, I know guys who treated them like trading cards. They were kind of popular like Garbage Pail Kids.

Nowadays, I don’t know anyone who looks at a package of smokes any longer than it takes to identify the brand.

Good. I’m tired of seeing people alternate puffs of cigarette smoke and albuterol.

Those don’t look all that gruesome to me, compared to others I’ve seen from China or Thailand.

What’s with the lady holding a keyboard over her head? (#4 in “Cigarettes are addictive” series)

Looks like she’s holding a purse or a newpaper over her head so she can indulge in her addiction in the rain.

If the idea behind the graphic pix on the packages were carried to the logical extreme, what’s next?

A shot of a guy throwing up on a bottle of vodka.

A picture of an abnormal EKG and diseased heart on a package of bacon.

A morbidly obese kid on sugar cookies.

And…?

A guy with feet in concrete getting tossed overboard with his pockets stuffed with racing forms

“Erectile dysfunction? No… Emphysema? Ewww… Oh, give me a pack of Low Birth Weights.”

[/no idea which comedian I’m dimly remembering]

Years ago, I knew a guy who collected the gum disease ones and papered the door to his study with 'em.

These warnings make me feel like I’m back in seventh-grade health science again. I feel as if I’m being talked down to, and I don’t even smoke.

Compared with what they put in the cigarette packages here the FDA proposals look like pictures of kittens playing with yarn balls.

WARNING!!! Disturbing images here.

Damn, that’s like bad (good?) porno - you’re not always sure what exactly it is that you’re looking at.

Jeez. At what point do we say, “enough”? Just one more step on the long march towards serfdom. Hey, government, you have a few bad habits of your own. Howzabout working on some of those before you tell free citizens what to do? KTHKSBYE.

I tell the teens that I work with who smoke to vision every time they inhale on a cigerette they are sucking on an infected penis.

You should see the looks that gets.
