Greasy Sunday

As a writer of fine, publisher-rejected literature, I am always researching the German culture in order to fine tune the characters in my “un-marketable” “too-emotionally-complex” novel.

So, in researching Totensonntag (a German day of remembering the dead) I keep coming to a list of holidays that lists GREASY SUNDAY.

My god that sounds fascinating, although no one will say WHAT it is. I asked my German pen pal who said “It’s a Sunday in Spring when wives can cheat on their husbands without regret”. As exciting a holiday as that would be, I suspect he was just flirting

So, tell me, does anyone know WHAT Greasy Sunday is? Anything to do with Easter?

It’s otherwise known as Quinquagesima Sunday (the Sunday before Lent I believe) according to Bibliomania. And if you’re really interested it says to see Du Cange vol 111, pg196, col.2.

Well of course! Let me just pull that off my shelf.

quinquagesima jarbaby has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
