Great breakup songs?

What song’s do you associate with breaking up with your ex?? (I ripped this idea off from someone seriouart’s thread.)

Mine is “Found Out About You” by the Gin Blossoms.

You make me come…
You make me complete…
You make me completely miserable!

Whatever song this is seems to work.

Grrr. That was me, drainthelizard. I started one of my own. I guess two is better than one, though.

Oh, and 2sense, the song is by Lit. It’s called “Miserable.” I agree, it’s awesome.

I’ve always liked “Already Gone” by the Eagles and “Goodnight and Thank You” from the musical Evita

  • With or without you
with or without you ou ou
    I can’t live
    with or without you. *
By Bono and the lads .

There’s always that song from the Wedding singer .

And very good advice, too. Here are the lyrics;
50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, By Simon and Garfunkel.

For the youngsters who may not have heard it.

“I Am Unworthy Of Your Love,” by Stephen Sondheim, from the classic musical “Assassins.” Possibly the only love duet between John Hinckley, Jr. and Sara Jane Moore.

Still makes me list a little.

But the two greatest break up songs I know are “How Do You Tell Someone?” and “New Orleans” by Cowboy Mouth.

I hereby resist the temptation to post the lyrics to both here.

I nominate the following,
“If you’re leaving, can I come too?”
and
“Take your tongue out of my mouth, I’m kissing you goodbye.”

I think it’s bad enough when someone breaks up with you, without having to put up with someone else’s moaning.

There was one song I really wanted to hear when my ex brutally dumped me, but I have no idea who it is. The lyrics (that I remember):
I can’t make you love me if you don’t
I can’t make your heart feel, (something something)

Any ideas?

Besides that one, there is a Swedish band called the Weeping Willows who have the most depressing break-up songs ever. There was one I kept on repeat after I was stupid enough to break up with the greatest guy on earth. Just listen to this (well read and imagine Chris Isaac-like music):
Now time has passed since we broke up
And I start to see the good things again
I’ll never love another girl
Now time has passed and these facts remain the same
You’re the best thing that ever happened to me
I’m sorry but at that moment I couldn’t see
I wonder if you have some space for me
Or if I’m bound to sail this lonesome sea

Great. Now I’m depressed again.

I believe that was Bonnie Rait (sp?)

My favorite break-up song is ‘I’d rather see you dead’ by Pat Travers.

Wow, a Mental as Anything reference! (If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too)

I Hope You’re Happy Now by Elvis Costello:

“Like a matador/ with his pork sword/ while we all die of laughter”

Henry Rollins’ You Didn’t Need (to do that to me)

from "Luck of the Draw"3. I Can’t Make You Love Me
(M. Reid/A. Shamblin)

Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don’t patronize - don’t patronize me

CHORUS: Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
'Cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t
I’ll close my eyes, then I won’t see
The love you don’t feel when you’re holding me
Morning will come and I’ll do what’s right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
CHORUS: Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
'Cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t

Yes, it tears my heart out…

Tom petty “Time to Move On”

Time to move on, time to get going, what lies ahead i have no way of knowing, but under my feet baby grass is growing, time to move on…

I guess its pretty clear that I was the one who had enough of the relationship.

No regrets -Walker Brothers
Nathan Jones-Supremes
You’re no good - Swinging blue jeans
It should have been me - Yvonne Fair
It just doesn’t matter anymore - BuddyHolly
Wherever I lay my hat - Marvin Gaye(b side of one of his hits)
I can’t get used to losing you - Andy Williams

“For No One”-The Beatles
“The day breaks, your mind aches, you find that all her words of kindness linger on when she no longer needs you.
And in her eyes you see nothing, no sign of love behind the tears cried for no one, a love that should have lasted years.”

And “I Follow the Sun”-The Beatles
“And now the time has come, so my love, I must go. One day you will look to see I have gone, but tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun.”

“Don’t Speak,” by No Doubt.

**Kansas City, Kansas City Here I Come[/] They got some crazy little wimmin there and I’m gonna get me one.

'Kay,
Mine is “If you go” by the Hothouse Flowers. It’s not bitter or hateful or whiny in the least. The lyrics simply say “I hope you find what you’re looking for.”
My wife’s vote is for “Purple Rain”.

I never meant to cause you any sorrow,
I never meant to cause you any pain…
