Our original due date is June 15th, but we’re having her induced a little early. By all estimations, even with being induced on Friday night, we’re still going to end up with a lil’ Chastain that’s well on her way to being nine pounds.
Our first baby. And I’m just thrilled that all those years spent hovering near the microwave, waiting on a Hot Pocket, didn’t damage the swimmers.
Somebody give me some words of wisdom. God knows I’m going to need them.
They can be wrong about that stuff, you know. They told me mine was 8 pounds at the very least at 37 weeks. I was induced at 38 weeks, and my son was only 6 pounds, 10 ounces. He hadn’t even cracked ten pounds by his two month check-up a few weeks ago. Anyway, good luck. And by all means, tell Mrs. Chaistain have the epidural-- it’s wonderful.
Wow! Congratulations on the new addition! All of my babies were quite large. My oldest was 9 lbs. 6 oz; my second was 10 lb. 1 oz, and my third one was 11 lb. 14 oz.!! Of course, they were all C-section. Best of luck to you and your missus and the little one!
Two li’l pearls of wisdom (learned the hard way): In the first few weeks, when the baby wakes up crying in the middle of the night, and you both say “She couldn’t possibly be hungry again!” she’s probably hungry again.
The second one is an old one, but by golly it’s true: sleep when the baby sleeps! When I was in the hospital after my first one, my sister gave me a copy of It by Stephen King. I read when the baby slept! By the time I was done the book, I was so exhausted I could barely function. Needless to say, I didn’t make that mistake with the next two!
Okay, okay, I know I said two pearls of wisdom, but this one is really important, and it’s possible that no one else may tell you: as you go through the phases of babyhood (the awake half the night phase; the put everything in the mouth phase; the scream at the top of their lungs for no apparent reason phase; the scared-of-everything phase; the list is endless), well during those phases it will probably seem like you will be putting up with this for the rest of your freakin’ life. It really helps to remind yourself (and each other) that it’s only a phase, and it will pass.
Good God Almighty! I bow down before your great mothery birthing goodness! Mine were just six and five pounds each.
This is probably the best pearl you’ll hear, especially if Mommy Chastain is nursing. Breastfed babies will want to nurse every 2 hours the first few weeks, or even the first few months.
 Sometimes I think it’s just as well that it would be impossible for me to give birth any way but by a section, assuming I could carry a baby long enough to get to that point. Yikes. (If I have kids it’ll be by adopting them or marrying somebody who already has them.) Those are big babies!
Congratulations, Chastain and family! Babies are fabulous. Crazy-making, but fabulous. I think I’m speaking for a lot of us when I say we want pictures ASAP!
I can’t believe no one has said be sure to link to pics after the event.
Congrats and good luck. I hope the induction goes fast. With our first, I was still on Pitocin with no luck 12 hours after they started inducing.
Have fun and enjoy your last few full nights of sleep for a while.
How wonderful! A new baby on the way! I hope everything goes smoothly. Um, do NOT have an epidural. They are NOT wonderful. My $0.02.
Try to relax, follow your heart, don’t listen to too many experts or well-meaning people who think they’re experts. Don’t buy too much stuff, expect the unexpected, be ready for the adventure of your life. Bring your wife juice and water frequently and don’t let relatives and in-laws run your life during the first few weeks. Get all the rest you can. God bless you and the wee one!
As it turns out, the missus has had epidurals in the past due to chronic back problems. As such, she’s well aware of the “side-effects,” so she’ll be prepared for them.
I would not want to be the one to tell her not to have one.
