I was thinking about what were the best movies that I have ever seen, and I noticed that there were a couple films at the top of my list that I never wanted to see again. The biggest one i can think of is Schindler’s List. I probably wouldn’t have seen that movie if my high school hadn’t made everyone watch it together in the theatre. You’ve never heard such a hush fall on over 100 high school kids as after that movie.
This got me wondering, does anyone else have a movie that they thought was tremendous, but had such an effect on them that they didn’t want to watch it ever again?
Seven (merciful God)
Beloved (actually I just read the book, but the harrowing subject matter kept me out of the theatre)
Pink Flamingoes (sorry, fans)
…and just about anything that has a really graphic rape scene in it. Somewhere around "98 I suddenly became burnt out on graphic portrayals of violence against women. I mean, more than usual.
I saw it for the first time while I was in high school, then read a copy of the screenplay, then saw it again when I was in college, and I remember sitting there and thinking, “Okay, I KNOW this movie backwards and forwards now, and I don’t EVER have to see this movie again, if I don’t wanna.”
Whoa! Some spoiler warnings if you’re going to give away the end of the movie, please!
For me, I’d have to go with The Piano. Great film, loved it, can never bear to see it again. Ditto Saving Private Ryan. I can never ever ever stand to sit through that opening sequence again, no way, no how.
