And, hopefully, not ones that we’ve all seen before.
First, the video that I was watching that made me decide to start this thread: Joachim Witt and Peter Heppner’s Die Flut. If you can figure that out, please let me know, but it’s a brilliant song with brilliant visuals. That, I think, defines what I’m looking for here.
Next, Archive’s Bullets. I met this song through the trailer to Cyberpunk 2077, which in its own way is every bit as good a music video as the “official” one. But again, it’s a great song with some compelling visuals, even if I can’t possibly hope to resolve them into a coherent narrative.
Finally, a touch of the exotic. One of the minor pleasures of being a fan of Sergei Lukyanenko’s “Watches” series of books has been tracking down the tunes that show up on protagonist Anton Sergeevich Gorodetsky’s minidisc player. The biggest hit of those I’ve found has been Пикник. I’ve not delved deep into their backcatalogue (and their backcatalogue is deep; they’ve been around since 1978), but Кукла с человеческим лицом is a nice little taste.
The two part mini-movie by Biting Elbows: The Stampede and Bad Motherfucker (NSFW as you can probably guess). They’re like a seven minute long action thriller.
I came into the thread to post this video, with similar commentary.
Or this one.
Since the two that jumped to mind have been taken I’ll go with Too Much Joy. It’s early 90s and low budget, but it’s got Penn & Teller. And with a sample size of n=2, I’ve never seen a bad music video featuring those two.
It’s about existential angst, is there anything more to life, anything better, contemplating suicide.
The flood is a metaphor for both the death the comes from drowning and from cleansing and a new start as in Noah’s flood.
And speaking of Noah’s flood, the video is a apocalyptic vision of perfect couples being taken aboard an ark to weather out whatever ‘flood’ is coming and the rejects are kept outside. Are you saved or rejected? Will you fear or welcome the flood?
