Great! Now there's Marines in my Backyard...

Ok so Mrs.Phlosphr and I wake up to a clock radio in the morning. This morning we hear, Saddam launches Scud-type missiles at Kuwait and American forces, two missiles are intercepted, no cassualties, and no damage.

So we naturally think, thats good, no damage to our guys and Saddam gives unequivocal proof that he has not disarmed…

Then I am on my way to work and notice a small convoy of humvee’s perched not too far from my house, and the marines, or national guardsman, or whoever were sitting on the front of the vehicles with Machine guns in hand… Damn! Sorry folks but in my 33 years on this earth I have never seen something like this so close to my house. I live on coastal New England. Not too far from a small nuclear power facility. A couple towns over there is a defense plant and submarine base… But geez, I wasn’t expecting this???

Anyone else notice increased security around where they live?

There was an extra clerk near the front of the Walgreens last night about 10:00 pm.

I wake up with a Marine in my bed every morning!

I work on a Naval Air Station. We’ve had to get bar code stickers for our cars. For the last couple of years, they’ve done 100% ID check at the gates. This morning, the guard stopped me to tell me the number “3” sticker on my base decal was peeling off and I might not be allowed on base in the future. I’ve got the bar code. I’ve got the new-style ID card. I drive a minivan, fercryinoutloud. But I’m a potential threat if my “3” falls off.

I feel so much more secure now.

I live in NYC so like, umm, yeah I have.

Now I know what I’ve been missing the past ten years. Globemasters & starlifters approaching the airport and not giving a sh*t about our city. (planes normally approach a couple of miles away from the city, but military planes don’t care…) Good ol gulfwar

Not yet, but given that my dad works about 3 miles from the Seabrook plant, I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes home from work with a similar tale.

When I was in grade school we had MPs escort us on our busride to school every day and check our backpacks for explosives. Whenever we drove with our parents to the PX on base we had to stop for a vehicle inspection. When I went to visit my dad at work We had to go through three security stops with metal detectors, wands, and physical search. And this was during peacetime.

Last week when my brother went to the base we used to be stationed at, they wouldn’t even let non-active duty personnell within a mile of the base.

I work 3 blocks from the stock exchange, so yep. Half the building I live in has Hasidic Jews, so there is usually a police van hanging around when the middle east flares up.

Sure brag about it too… now everyone will want Marines in their backyard.

Semper Fi

 I hope youre female !! …Waaaait… I didnt ask that! Dont tell me!! :smack:

GO US MARINES!!

Not worried if Kalhoun is male or female, but do hope it’s the same Marine each morning.
Anyway, sounds not too bad. My mum and dad back in Windsor UK, have had tanks and soldiers all over the place in the last few months protecting the Heathrow flight corridor. The don’t half make a mess of the daffodils, though with those catterpiller tracks of theirs;)

BWAHAHAHAHA! Best. post. ever.

Did he secure the landing zoning, take the hill and plant his flag?

marines are more difficult to extricate from backyards than groundhogs.

I worked across the street from the 1st Anthrax attack, the one in Boca Raton, FL. More media than security, I suppose though.

Umm, did any of you all take a second to think that Kalhoun might be a man, and the marine he’s talking about might actually be a woman?

Yes I did… it wouldnt have been as funny :stuck_out_tongue:

I work on a Marine base, and security has been much tighter ever since 9-11. With the manditory ID card check and the occasional car inspection, I have to leave for work about 10 minutes earlier just to get there on time.

From what I’ve heard comming back from Canada can be a pain (a friend of mine spend an hour and a half on a bus waiting to get through and had two men with guns drawn on the bus, just routine  ).

I’m going up to Canada saturday, I hope its not that tough to get back in.
