Shooting in DC, at Washington Navy Yard

News story here. This is about a block from where I work, and I go to the Navy Yard several times a week for meetings/etc. I can see more than a dozen police cars and ambulances right outside the base entrance. Crazy.

Damn. I used to work there too. That scene is on M Street SE, right?

Yes. Live news feed here.

I’m hearing rumors that three people were shot (not sure of their condition), the guy has an AR-15, and that it happened outside the buildings. Let’s see how accurate the rumors are.

So far I’ve heard that the shooter was in the building (bldg 197) with a shotgun. There was an early report of a victim near the Navy Yard Metro station (DC subway), but now I’m hearing that it was a heart attack, not a shooting victim.

MSNBC report: 7 have been shot including 2 police officers. A separate report on the Washington Post says one police officer was wounded when he approached a room where a gunman was holed up. There’s rumors of a second gunman, too, but those aren’t published.

According to that article, it caused a ground stop at Reagan National Aiport. Ya know, just in case he manages to get out of the NAVSEA building, jump in the river, swim 1.5 miles downstream, and then start shooting airplanes out of the sky.

One can never be too safe.

Are you sufficiently qualified in security and public threats to offer a basis for your wise-guy sarcasm?

Anybody is. Security over-reaction is the new normal in Patriot Amurkkka.

I know people there.

Worried.

Everyone, please back off the political pot-shots (sic). If you want to debate national attitudes toward security, start a thread in the appropriate forum.

Aye-aye. Sorry.

Ditto and ditto.

Yeah my sister used to work at the Dept. of Navy, first at the Pentagon and then was consolodated to the Navy Yard. She’s retired, but does consulting for them at the Navy Yard, but her contract was cut because of sequestration. We just got off the phone, she’s spoken to some of her former colleagues who are getting out of the building.

I hope no one else is hurt, I hope we keep this in perspective, I hope whoever did this is caught, I hope they still have tonight’s Nats/Braves game (which is at the Navy Yard Metro and for which I have tix), and I hope the Nats kick the Braves ass. In that order.

Since some people here seem to know people there, I just saw the following numbers posted if you are looking for information about family and friends who work in the Navy Yard:

202-433-6151 or 202-433-9713

I got that from the local ABC News station.

Here is WUSA the local CBS affiliate.

Noon briefing. DC Police Chief saying they’re still searching for 2 other possible suspects.

Keeping perspective means letting a trivial game go on with thousands of people within two blocks of an incident like this? It would be foolish. A lockdown of one evening would seem to be prudent. We don’t know yet whether there’s something else in store. And four people are dead. this should get at least one evening’s respect. Fuck the game. As it is, traffic is going to be a nightmare for those leaving work today. The game crowds will make things worse.

Anyone have any other updates on this? I have friends in DC who work with the Navy and they aren’t even getting much intel on exactly what is going on.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make? You don’t have to be standing on a runway in order to launch/shoot “something” at flying aircraft. It’s unknown how many shooters there are. It’s uncertain if there are explosives involved. It’s unknown if this is an attack coordinated with other possible locations. An “airport” for example or a baseball stadium.

I assume it will take the lame stream media (We’d Rather be First than Correct) at least 48 hrs before the public has a reasonably clear understanding of what actually happened.
