There have been unconfirmed reports of another shooting at Bolling Air Force Base, which is right across the river from the Washington Navy Yard. I have not seen these reports yet on the local news.
Actually, I think that by having the game, we would be showing the world that we won’t let armed lunatics dictate how we live our lives. That’s what I meant by keeping it in perspective.
Of course, this is 21st America, where we do let armed lunatics dictate how we live our lives, frequently and with great energy.
Thanks for merging the threads mods.

A game is simply too trivial to serve as such a message. There are going to be ongoing security and logistical concerns the rest of the day in that neighborhood. If it were on the other side of town, it would be a different matter. But the stadium is right next to this incident. I know people there who need to get home from Navy Yard tonight. I don’t want game crowds and traffic in the way. Game traffic is bad enough when there hasn’t been a mass shooting in the area.
I am one of those people that needs to get home tonight ![]()
I shouldn’t have a problem as long as the Metro (subway) station is open and accessible.
Of note- the local news is constantly talking about how “secure” the Navy Yard is. This is misleading- it’s quite difficult for a random person to just get on the Yard. But for employees (and contractors like me) who work or regularly visit the Yard, we have passes and IDs that allow us to get on the base without any sort of search whatsoever. Occasionally a guard may ask to look in a bag, if you have one, but that’s pretty rare. It would be trivially easy for someone with one of these IDs to get on the base with a handgun, and only marginally more difficult to get on the base with long-guns concealed in a large bag (or the trunk of a car, if the car has the proper stickers).
Now the reports are that the Bolling Air Force Base stuff was a false alarm.
At least the sequestration turned out to be good for something, then.
Three shooters, one dead, two at large. Nothing in story to indicate identities or motives. All were wearing what appeared to be khaki or olive military uniforms.
It’s really confusing whether there were one, two, or three shooters; different news outlets are reporting different numbers of shooters.
It has not been confirmed that there are two additional shooters- just possible additional shooters. I think it’s equally likely that police received reports of some other armed men, but they may have been responders rather than shooters.
It’s a Navy Base, so it has its own security and its own armory. It’s possible that some non-police Navy personnel armed themselves in order to assist the response, and may have been reported as additional shooters by scared civilians.
That is precisely what I was thinking
CBS News named one of the shooters then retracted it. I’d hate to be that guy if in fact he’s not involved.
Yeah, the media didn’t learn much from Boston, did they?
Death toll: WaPo says at least 9, mayor says at least 12.
Bearing in mind that this is a fast-developing, rumor0fraught story, latest word is that there are at least 12 fatalities.
I am 2.4 miles from the Navy Yard right now. All seems calm here, but someone who was out and about reported “fantastic” levels of security.
Still ‘sheltering in place’ here.

NBC News has preliminarily identified him (shooter) as a civilian contractor, Aaron Alexis of Ft. Worth. Googling that name there is such an identification from there with an accompanying picture, attributed to bustedmugshots.com.
There is no confirmation yet this is the person. Grain of salt and all that.
