Another vote for G.I. Joe, even though they managed to invent the worst sounding name for an otherwise very cool evil civilization. Not Cobra of course, but the suckiness that is Cobra-la. I mean guys, Cobra-la?? Please. And having Cobra-lalalalalala as a war cry is just wrong.
Another one of my favorites but that I rarely caught for some reason was the one where the world is covered by some plague cloud that turns everyone under the cloud into a disfigured zombie-like being. There was a group of 4-5 good guys on some heavy duty vehicles toughing out against similarly equipment bad guys. Anybody remember the title of this one? Please?
All of you are insane! If anything saved 80s comics, at the very least in Germany, it was Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs! Very little came close to it. It had everything. Action, humor, attractive females, not that I had much interest in that back then. Females, I mean.
My list:
Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs
Transformers
The Real Ghostbusters
Mask
Duck Tales
An honorable mention goes to the Smurfs, Count Duckula, and the Gummi Bears.
I loved all the features of the action figures in that line, though I never had one of the toys. IMHO, the comic book series was better than the cartoon. Google it, and you can probabbly find tons of fan pages.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Heathcliff yet. As a cat lover and being exposed to Tom and Jerry and Tweety and Sylvester cartoons, it was a welcome relief to finally see a cartoon where the cat wins for once.
I loved the show, but didn’t care much for Heathcliff. I preferred the other half of the show, starring Riffraff, Mongo, and that effeminate cat on skates (can’t remember his name, dammit). They lived in an amazing tower of junk and had all kinds of adventures. Heathcliff was boring in comparison, even though he was cuter.
My list would be:
Thundercats–“Feel the magic, hear the roar, Thundercats are loose! Roarrr!” And we all know Panthro was a brother.
The Smurfs–Handy, Grouchy, Clumsy, and Vanity Smurf were my favorites. I detested Brainy, Jokey (he played too much and his exploding presents weren’t funny!), and Hefty (the jock with roid-rage).
Honorable Mention: C.O.P.S.–With characters names like Miss Demeanor and Main Frame, you can’t go wrong!
I think I blanked out Thandarr becuase it hit about time that Dungeons and Dragons went from obscure to ‘fairly prominent’ and every dang geek, or quasi geek that touched the Dungeon Masters Guide was constantly trying to figure out or announce what the stats of the Sun Sword were. (For some reason this did not happen with Star Wars Light Sabers as much).
Does anyone else find the thread title slightly amusing? Greatest 80s cartoon EVER.
Does that mean we can list the greatest 80s cartoon from the 1960s? The greatest 80s cartoon from 2003? I saw this great 80s cartoon the other day made during WWII…
