My daughter and her husband recently moved to Greensboro,NC. They have no social support network there yet…no friends to ask. Their company was going to offer health insurance, then changed their minds. While they were still looking for some affordable healthcare,my daughter got pregnant. So they are uninsured, but able to pay for their healthcare. Problem is, the don’t know how to go about choosing an obstetrician, not being at all familiar with the area, and local agencies and resources are not being helpful.
So do any Dopers who might live in the area have a recommendation? You can PM me if you’d rather not post doctor names here.
We were very happy with Dr. Arthur Stringer. Two of our three were handled by him. Great guy and my wife raves about him. Not sure of the address, as he moved his office a while back, but I am sure you can find him on Google.
I don’t know if she’s still in the area, as we moved back to Kentucky five years ago, but when we lived in Greensboro my ob/gyn was Vanessa Haygood, and she was awesome.
You guys are great! I forwarded all the recommendations to my daughter. She’s getting such a runaround when she went to the county health department. She called and called and called and couldn’t get through, so she stopped in there to make an appointment to get “rated”. They said…you have to call to make appointments. Really? So she pulled out her phone. They said…no cell phones allowed in the lobby. She said…I’ll go to my car and call you then. She called and got an appointment, but they said they couldn’t accept the pregnancy test results from Planned Parenthood, she’d have to take another test. So she took more time off from work and went down there, showed them her PP (heehee) results, and they said…oh, I guess we can accept these after all. First appointment is Feb. 22…but only to get rated, not to see a doctor. Then they said…well, if you’re not eligible for Medicaid we won’t be able to help you anyhow. She said…really? Because your website says you have a sliding scale for people who have income and can pay. They said…it does? We do? Let us check on that…hmmm, you appear to be right.
She really doesn’t want to deal with these people any more. Apparently no one uses the agency unless they are completely unable to pay, and she doesn’t want to be treated as if she is destitute. Or spoken to as if she is uneducated. She is just uninsured. And no insurance policy she buys right now will covered the pregnancy and delivery…pre-existing condition and all.
That has been my experience in the ER too. Patients come in saying they can’t get Medicaid until they have a note with a due date from a doctor and they cant see a doctor without Medicaid. So they come to the ER where I ask them their last menstrual period and then write a note with an estimated due date. And they get a big bill for it too which I think then gets retroactively paid by Medicaid. So stupid!
