What alternative greetings would you suggest in a sustained exchange of emails with a colleague or a person of the same [hierarchical] level ? It seems boring to say “Best wishes” again and again. And ending a message with just one’s name is not fit for all occasions. “Cheers” ? Seems worn out.
See you soon,
Till next time,
Sincerely,
Farewell,
Take care,
Regards,
Later,
Insert Parting Words here?
I like to end emails to friends with this:
K BYE.
However, professional/formal emails get a
Sincerely,
Oh – and if they did anything for you – “Thanks” or “Thank you” always works.
I almost always sign off biz emails with “thanks,” unless it’s clearly irrelevant – which it almost always is, since either I’m asking for info or action of some sort, or responding to said info being provided.
Friends, usually “later,” “talk to you later,” or “love.”
Oops – forgot non-work peer who I don’t know very well (fellow Doper, friend of a friend, etc.) – If neither “thanks” nor “later” is relevant, I use “regards.”
It depends on the nature of the relationship. If it’s someone I don’t often talk to, I’d probably say:
Regards,
Sincerely,
Cheers,
Best,
If it’s someone I work with often and have a good repoire with, it might be:
Thanks,
I hope you have a great weekend, (I’d only say that on Tuesdays, though ),
Hope you’re having a great week,
Talk to you soon,
For friends and others closer to me (like my husband), it might be:
Ciao,
Mwah!
Love,
Love you,
There’s always the -! Like,
- Miss Violaceous
Other than that, I use “Ciao” or “snogs” (action asterisks surrounding a good-bye kiss).
In business I use “Regards.” I think it feels less automatic than, say, “Sincerely.” Besides, how sincere am I generally being?
I’m guessing ‘toodles’ is out of the question?
I almost always use either “Thanks” or “Have a great day” in business email.
With friends it may vary. “Later” “Ciao” and “Call me now or die!” have all been used (the former two more frequently than the latter).
For my family it’s always “Love–D” or the occasional variant of “Love you–D”.
My work email has an automatic signature at the bottom with my name and contact information. For business email to people I don’t know, I open with “Ms. [Name],” and close with “Thanks” “Thank you” or “Sincerely” and let my signature do the rest.
For business email to colleagues I interact with regularly, I’d prefer to omit openings and closings altogether, just getting to the point and letting my signature be my signature. But I usually chicken out (oh no! someone will think I’m rude!) and end up opening with “Hi [Name],” and closing with “Cheers, E.”
Interesting, Bites. The Oxford dictionary says *tooddle-oo * or *toodle-pip * “goodbye”. "Origin unknown, perhaps alteration of French *à tout à l’heure * ‘see you soon’ "
So why not *toodles * ?
I just Regards most of the time, or -Jin or even -J if it’s something like a repeated back-and-forth email exchange.
Thanks everyone for the greetings options!
Have a nice week, you all
and *mwah! * to the ladies!
