Grey trousers with a black coat - faux pas or not?

I’m tired of wearing suits to work, so this morning I rebelled and wore mid-grey trousers with a black coat, over a shirt and tie. This is at a reasonably (but not terribly) formal corporate office. Is this acceptable wear, or did I boob on a grand scale?

If I should do this again, am I likely to be the target of much pointing and laughing, or will people think “Hmm; sharp dresser. Knows his clothes.”?
