I must be blind. I’m hoping that someone can give a description, maybe a coordinate map, or enhanced image, or some sort of visual evidence that this image on Snopes…
…actually does show a grinning demon peeking out from behind Elizabeth’s ear. I simply do not see it. Where are the eyes? Where’s the mouth? Is it tilted at an angle? Is there anyone else who doesn’t see it, or am I the only one?
I also saw that on snopes and couldn’t figure out for the life of me how people were getting the image of a devil out of that. I too am hoping that somebody can enlighten me.
I hardly think it’s distinctly a devil or anything else, but if you look in the curls and waves of her hair in the area circled in the snopes photo, I could, (if I closed one eye and scrunched my nose) see in the red-circled area a nose and eyes made out of hair.
Where? Where is the nose? Where are the eyes. Use something like compass directions form the center of the circle. Is one of the eyes ENE? NNE? Due north?
I do see a face in it, if I strain to look for it. I wouldn’t describe it as a “grinning devil”, more like an old man with a large hooked nose and closed eyes. The face fills most of the red circle in the Snopes illustration, looking away from Elizabeth at about a 45 degree angle to the viewer. The mouth is right at the bottom of the circle, a nostril of the large nose about on a level with the top visible part of Elizabeth’s ear.
The mouth is the black line near the bottom of the circle. Directly above that is a white line that is tilted to the lower right, which is the nose; it even has a kind of nostril on the left of it. Then above and left of that is the left eye, a roundish figure, with something that appears to be like an eyelid above a circular eye on the edge of the hair to the right.
Someone with wayyyy too much gin in him was looking at that engraving one day…
Okay. I guess that’s a better view, and now I do sort of see it. I think. Maybe. (Still don’t know where the eyes are.)
Still, it’s about as clear as some of those Jesus on a grilled cheese or Mary in a broken window things. I think I would have classified it as false just because it’s so freaking vague and interpretable.
Here’s a little bit better image with the alleged devil area isolated. I see something that might vaguely suggest a mouth and eyes but I really have to try to do even that much.
Hamlet Do you see yonder cloud that’s almost in shape of a camel? Polonius By the mass, and ’tis like a camel, indeed. Hamlet Methinks it is like a weasel. Polonius It is backed like a weasel. Hamlet Or like a whale? Polonius Very like a whale.
Lucy and Linus and Charley Brown are lying on the grass looking up at the clouds in the sky. Lucy says to Linus and Charley, “You know, when you look at the clouds, you can see shapes.” And she says, “Linus, what do you see in the clouds?” And Linus says, “Well, up there I see a bust of Salieri, Mozart’s chief competitor. And over there I see a map of the New Hebrides.” And he points outs which islands are which. Lucy interrupts and she says, “So what do you see, Charley Brown?” And Charley says, “I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsey, but I changed my mind.”
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
