We’ve seen the new enclosure several times. There is a plexiglass wall between the two bears and zoo patrons. We hadn’t seen them by the wall yet.
One sauntered over when a child walked up. He tried to pry open cracks in the concrete. Perhaps he was only attracted by shininess, but he tried to chew the screws that held the wall in. Eventually both bears came up to the wall and tried to get out. They weren’t idly beating on the glass, they were trying to exploit seams and connections on the wall.
They were removed from a park in the Northwest “when their mother taught them to steal from trach cans near humans.”
I couldn’t help but wonder if we or the child was being regarded as prey.
Speaking on behalf of bears everywhere, I’d like to say…
“snuffle snuffle snort snort-grunt huff sniff”
…and I think that about sums it up.
I’ve never been Timothy Treadwell close to a bear. What was with the copious saliva, was he just happy to see a bite sized person?
