Holy cow, I just got GTA3 a few weeks ago for the PC and have been playing it so much that these thoughts have actually been crossing my mind as I drive to and from work.
Amen…I’ve actually caught myself mapping out the city as I drive, trying to figure out the best way to get away from the police, wondering which of the cars around me were driven my gang members, ect. I do miss the Moonies, though. Goranga!
Hey, I’m a new GTA3 fan as well! I just bought it on Saturday. Usually I have my son on weekends, but this weekend he went camping with mom. So I decided to buy myself an “adult” video game as a consolation prize.
Holy shit, is that game fun! Horribly, disturbingly fun! That’s about all I did this weekend. And yeah, my dreams did have a few odd “gang war” bits in them…
So yes, I reckon I’ll be getting the next one too.
However, while all these improvements sound very cool, I would rather see the introduction of strategy and role-playing elements; I want to truly move up from a baseball bat-weilding thug to the boss of bosses, recruiting and arming a gang and planning raids on other gangs’ turf that will actually have a permanent effect on the opposing gangs; I want to have options for income like extortion, drugs, and prostitution, each with their own pitfalls… I want my initial bosses to assign me driving or run 'n gun missions based on my performance in each so far… I know there are some mediocre strategy games involving the mob, but I want to see a true combination of action, strategy, and role-playing. GTA3 is tons of fun, but I’m sometimes frustrated by the mindlessness of it. I hate the fact that I can go splatter 30 Mafia thugs and it doesn’t have any real effect on my reputation, gang attitudes, or the strength of their organization.
One more thing, I think at the very least, more uses for and less availability of money (car upgrades, better digs, companion thugs, etc) would be a simple way to add a little thought to the game without fundementally changing anything about the game like I’m talking about above.
How’s this for disturbing: I remember looking at the traffic going by my window after a game of the origiogal GTA and thinking “Where are all of those people going? Are any of them on criminal errands? Are they driving their own cars?” Somewhat childish and unrealistic questions, but it did cause me to look at the world around me with a new sense of wonder and curiosity (which ultimately led me here :-)).
The best part of GTA3 for the PC (as opposed to the PS2) is that you can make the game play your own MP3s by just dropping the MP3s or shortcuts to them into the appopriate folder.
I don’t really like the in-game “radio stations,” but then I don’t like real radio stations, either. I do have to admit, though, some of the commercial parodies were pretty funny and written with a bit more wit than I would have expected.
I hope they release VC for the PC. I’ve heard rumors that the next GTA PC release will be online multiplayer. That’s going to rule! Plus, if you have a fast computer with a good video card, GTA3 looks sooo much better and more detailed on the PC than it does on the PS2.
I can’t wait to see me doing an insane stunt bonus in a flaming motorcyle. That or sniping someone off his motorcycle. Or hopefully a mission where I clear out a disco with a flame thrower (heh heh heh “disco inferno” heh…I’ll just go stand over there now…).
